Inconsistent? Definitely. Indulgent? Not quite. Adam McKay is not at all playing it safe with this movie— he’s attempting to throw an incredible number of different concepts and tones into the pot all at once. Sure, it’s not always successful, but I admire the effort. It’s completely emotionally incoherent (a fatal flaw for a film as preachy as this), but the unabashedly bold theming and consistently brilliant acting essentially cancels that out. Oh, and add half a star for the phenomenal score. There really is a masterpiece in here, McKay just lost sight of the bigger picture.

Spider-Man: No Way Home 2021
Unfortunately, the Spider-Maniness of this movie has caused it to be a tad overrated. The plot is as contrived as it gets, and very low stakes for the entire first half. Marvel is inching closer to using “a wizard did it” as the explanation for every conflict or plot development in their universe. That being said, it does some great stuff with the character of Peter Parker and is infectiously fun throughout.

Loki 2021
This show has an UNGODLY amount of exposition. Most of it is characters slowly going from room to room, spewing mumbo jumbo about the time stream, followed by a low-budget set piece or predictable twist. Loki went from a villain not to anti-hero, but straight up hero. Rather then having a cogent arc, he instantly became a lovable goofball and focuses on a romance (ugh).

The New Mutants 2020
This might be the worst thing I’ve ever seen projected on a screen.
