    The story is somewhat "hurried" but overall an original and ambitioue telling in a genre that you might not expect to find too many surprises or depth. Nathalie Portman's role as popdiva is in a strange way "understated" ,and complex . Quite an achievement.

    Actually beter because you aren't "tricked" into ultimately being charmed and having sympathy for Richie Bravo. He really is an asshole.
    And the sea side decor is fabulous in it's hellish, familiar, lonely nightmare.

    Watching this film again you realize that Kubrick isn't much of a "storyteller" but more someone who is interested in creating a relentless atmosphere. Had to think of his last work "Eyes Wide Shut" that in hindsight was better and certainly underrated.
    You also see that Jack Nicholson's "acting" style seems more and more ridiculous now. This is "over the top" taken to the extreme. More funny than anything to believe and take seriously.
