  As far as christian propoganda goes, this is as good as it gets. I mean, there’s a story here, characters have actual motivations and personality, and the movie is not completely tone-deaf or allergic to decent cinematography or hiring people who can act.

  Not good. Tropes abound here, characters are flat, boring, and painfully predictable. The dialogue is weak and forced, and the movie beats you over the head with its symbolism. “Did you get it? The bag is a metaphor!” Self-important and bloated with nothing really important to say, no commentary, no new thematic/philosophical territory explored. A film about lifeless suburbanites and their mind-numbingly mundane antics. Fight Club is a much better “we live in a society” film.

  Probably a film I’ll have to revisit. Eggers is well within his wheelhouse with a movie like this. A lot of his films deal with themes of sexual taboos and the relationship between social isolation and sexual desire, and how the monsters that arise from the hatred of libido which western culture tends to instill in people are destructive and inhibitive to self realization where they arise.
