Hated this, I had to skip the 10 minute rape scene because it made me so incredibly uncomfortable and upset. The constant shaking and spinning camera made me want to vomit- it felt more intentional in enter the void and climax or maybe I’m just getting sick of his style. This movie seriously is disgusting, every scene feels so dehumanizing. The camera doesn’t care about any of the women hurt, you don’t get to see them outside of their victimhood…

Betty Blue 1986
Portrayal of mental illness is questionable and weird ending…but see a lot of myself in Zorg and Betty when I was in my first serious relationship, with both characters a little lost but deeply in love with each other trying to navigate a romantic relationship for the first time. There is a childlike naivety that I think is captured well here. But I will say we don’t really get much of Betty’s inner world, the entire movie feels like it…

"Men act and women appear. Men look at women. Women watch themselves being looked at." -Berger
In this movie, we see Cleo transform from a woman that is desired to one that desires: from object to subject. The camera shifts from focusing on her face to the city around her. We are no longer looking at the city funneling its eyes at her but looking at the city through her eyes, now full of possibility.
