  It seems a little gross to write a review for what is basically Chapelle pouring his own feelings onto the stage, but the 4 stars are for courage. This is as raw as it gets and had me near tears several times. Essential viewing in these days.

  Rewatched this for the first time in many many years. A black director should have told this story, let’s say that up front. Some of the edges felt sanded down, with a few instances of cringeworthy jammed in humor. My criticism ends there. 
  This really is a wonderful movie. Truly beautiful in direction, scope, and story. They did right by giving this to Spielberg. He is our greatest director at creating iconography and that’s why he is striving for here. There are iconic images here. There are hero shots of the female leads that rival anything in Marvel. This is a film bursting with life.
