This film is above all, baffling. Having watched it, I can clearly see Cooper's passion, it shines through his very excitable, and often cartoonish, portrayal of Leonard Bernstein as well as his presentation as a director. What is confusing, is why on Earth- for all that passion and time spent on this project- is this the fucking movie you'd make? The movie seemed wholly focused on the narrative of Bernstein being secretly gay and suffering at every turn for it.…

Although for whatever reason I can't seem to vibe with Nolan on certain emotional wavelengths (although this film was very emotionally powerful) this is an undeniable achievement as a culmination of his later work and a formally inventive and incredibly visceral experience.
