    Despite the film feeling dated, it takes hold and that ending nails it.

    Hackman is like a 1970s Philip Marlowe (better than the version played by Elliot Gould in Altman's Long Goodbye). Knight moves.

    This was Hackman's favourite of his own performances. It's a small film, kind of like Of Mice and Men set in the early 1970s. Schatzberg's direction gets the job done.

    Pacino's performance as the Lennie character, here named Lionel, is particularly affecting because it's so unPacino like.

    Richard Lynch is very creepy, as he plays to type.

    Boring.

    Borrows heavily from Herzog's version but Eggers has the sensibility of someone who is probably better suited to making Marvel superhero films. Also, a bit from The Exorcist added in.

    I was looking at my watch fifteen minutes into it and even looked at my phone in my jacket to check the runtime so I'd know how long I'd have to endure.

    Not the least bit scary or funny. Just unnecessarily gross.
