  Watched it after reading this article on The New Yorker about the short story it’s based on.

  This movie diverges a lot from the original story both in tone and in morals, and it falls flat.

  The original material isn’t stellar but I think they could’ve made a really nice movie if they had the courage to dive deeper into themes like ethics and incarceration, free will, addiction, body chemistry. Instead it’s the usual story about redemption we’ve seen a million times over in spineless Yankee cinema, unfortunately.
