A brilliant image of the reclamation of childhood, fun and carefree family life. It beautifully portrays the classic Winnie the Pooh, making him more of an adult character than merely a child’s story. He is innocently and naively wise, giving Christopher, and us, a glimpse at how life can, and possibly should, be viewed. It’s a film with charm, resonance and laughs. The weather, colours and characters fit together like an EH Shepherd illustration. It is quintessential, nostalgic and thoroughly English.

El Cid 1961
A classic 1960s medieval epic. Imagine, if you will, that El Cid was not the hero of 11th Century Spain, but really the all-action, jousting cavalier of the 15th Century.
Along with some good Islamic representation, there is also the desire to portray a sense of unity and alliance between them. The reality was far different, far more nuanced and far more Christian.
A distinct and disappointing lack of facial hair from El Cid.
Bring back the long, simple, action-romance epic. It’s great.

Grease 1978
Messy. Completely morally dubious. Nobody is likeable. Sandy was okay until the end. Terrible character arc that condones letting go of your firmly held convictions to win a guy that treats you terribly and only wants to use you for your body. Iconic songs that work better outside of the context of the film. Feels like it could have been three films given its thematic conflicts. Very suspicious adult-student relationships, and back of neck holding. Very strange ending.

The Zone of Interest 2023
This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
Haunting, voyeuristic, gripping. Disturbingly normal. A true study in disparity and contradiction. Throughout the film, the viewer is put in a similar position to Höss: knowing fully everything that is happening in the camps, but existing in a world of comfort and luxury. It’s the subtlety and inference that gets you. Truly emphasises the ever-present reality of the Holocaust, its legacy and the sheer ruthless industrial complex that made it possible.
