Lays bare the whole tangled wreck of the 20th century. Due to pain, or stubbornness, these three men resolve to live independent and free. At the film's climax, with Monroe screaming at their hypocrisy, Eli Wallach prattles in Gable's ear about how they won't need anyone. Their kind of freedom destroys beauty, joy, and compassion.
