Can definitely see this in conversation with Cabaret—whereas that film showed the consequences of the kind of willful liberal ignorance that helped the Nazis take power, this shows the consequences of Nazism for the society it promised would be the beneficiaries of its genocidal policies

People who are smarter and more articulate than I am have already written about the issues with how this film portrays Vietnamese and indigenous people (issues carried over from Heart of Darkness, the book it’s based on)
The technical mastery and performances keep it from completely falling apart until they reach Kurtz, where it leans fully into orientalist imagery and stereotypes
I will say that I think the French Plantation dinner scene is pretty great, probably the best part of the film for the commentary it makes on colonial attitudes
