A fun meat and potatoes supernatural horror movie. It’s the kind of movie that functions like a roller coaster, lots of jump scares which to me is not at all a bad thing. I will say that the camera is used quite well in this movie, many of the film’s most effective scares are based around skilled and unique movement of the camera, often elevating the jump scares that might otherwise grow tiresome given their sheer frequency. Consistent moody atmosphere…
At times a bit confusing and unwieldy, the film is saved by its final act. Jimmy Stewart gives a likeable performance and the resolution at the end of all the dangling plot threads is genuinely impressive in that it feels like a relatively neat resolution to an otherwise very messy (and kind of silly) scheme. Some neat visuals in the back half as well, however I can’t help but feel like they’re a bit primitive in comparison to some of the visual works it clearly inspired that came later.
Nice surprise, literally hadn’t heard of this movie before turning it on. Paced well with good performances all around, everyone on screen has good chemistry. Only complaint is it’s thematically treading well worn territory. I think it’s fair to say this is probably the most extensive portrayal of mob life from the female perspective that I’ve ever seen though, in that sense it more than justifies its existence.
