Completely devoid of character and charm. Eggers seemed to walk the middle ground between horror and drama so much so that the film ended up being devoid of either. We all know the story is ridiculous, almost facetious in some regards, but the performances felt so emotionless. Why was Orlok so obsessed with Ellen? The Tragedy of Macbeth 2021
I’m quite sad to say I liked the set design/visual aesthetic and little else. Denzel was perhaps the worst Macbeth I’ve ever seen. I was more desperate for him to take a breath and pause whilst speaking than to carry on watching the film. I do English Lit at uni. I goddamn know my Shakespeare. And a good adaptation (particularly a theatrical one) will allow you to understand the language. Please tell me why I didn’t understand a word of this in the cinema… of a play I essentially know by heart….
