A simple story well told is no easy thing. This is a gem. My love of this movie increased as it unfolded. Its bratty star won me over. Screenwriter Kiarostami is a cinematic Chekovian with his irresistible slices of life.
A delightful Kiarostami-meets-Monty-Python/WesAnderson film. The comedy and surrealism are enjoyable, as are the tributes. The opening scene is a great transposed hipsterized version of the where is a friends house, but nothing beats the original (anywhere, ever). And so as much as I liked this, the move toward goofiness means it can’t match Kiarostami’s moving elegant simplicity.
The image promoting the film shows a couple sitting in a movie theater, and that's appropriate because while this is clearly a quirky, sweet romance about two lonely, working-class people in Finland, there's a lot of meta-cinema going on, too. This film is filled with allusions to and gags about movies. But it is so good, you don't always notice.

Very deadpan. Kind of Jarmuschian. The actresses/characters are kooky good.
