Character drama and morality play that got me on edge even though it can be considered slow-burning. The central tension between doing the right thing and succeeding in the amoral business of selling oil in 80s NYC is done well but sometimes lacks finesse. Another theme, how the dirty deeds of other actors enable the moral self-narrative of the protagonist as a 'clean' businessman, is sometimes hinted at but could have been explored more. In the end, the film offers us no clean solution but leaves with interesting questions that could have been a bit more lucid.
