  Gladstone stole the show. Definitely felt long but almost everything needed to be there. The mother’s death scene was incredible, maybe the only time I smiled in this despairing, gritty epic aside from when I saw DeNiro with his goggles on. Only thing I was confused by was why the Indian women kept marrying the white men when everything started happening. Turns out it was because they were required by law to have a white man be their financial “guardian” as they weren’t allowed to control their own money. Wish this wrinkle was explained in the movie and maybe explored between Molly and Ernest.
