I went back and forth on a pretty “meh” opening act. The final two thirds of the film are buoyed by some good performances and one of the best musical themes in cinema. This film has the scale and tension you would want from a monster epic and I probably will watch the sequel that’s hinted at towards the end - which is something!
I’m really fighting the urge to describe this film as doing too much. The insertion is the young Polish girl’s mission to hide food around the came and inclusion of Joseph Wulf’s “Sunbeams” didn’t feel developed or contextualized and the cuts to the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum at the end of really threw me. Those moments were certainly poignant and heartbreaking, but felt out of place as the rest of the film also shines because of the taut and subtle storytelling.…
