When Boq told Galinda he’d do anything for her, I believed him.

I have never felt a more personal connection to a film than I have to Eighth Grade. Middle school was one of the most tumultuous times of my life and this film perfectly mirrors many of my own experiences from when I was Kayla’s age. Bo Burnam nails the uncertainty and confusion of being a 13-year-old while acknowledging the added pressure social media puts on the current generation of middle schoolers.

Beautifully shot and well acted, The Witch is a horror film that shows the audience just enough to horrify, but little enough to allow their imaginations to fill in all the gruesome gaps. Harvey Scrimshaw, the young boy who plays Caleb, steals the show.

Prior to seeing the film I read articles about Christian groups claiming the film was satanic. This is pretty usual for hyping up horror movies before they release. That being said, as I left the theater I felt inclined to agree.
