PLEASE for the love of the universe read anti-colonial science fiction and fantasy written from marginalized perspectives. Y’all (you know who you are) are killing me. To see people praise books about empire written exclusively by white women and then turn around and say you don’t know who Octavia Butler is or that you haven’t read any NK Jemisin or that Babel was too heavy-handed just kills me! I’m not saying you HAVE to enjoy specific books but there is such an obvious pattern here

Some of y’all love marginalized stories but you don’t give a fuck about marginalized creators and characters, and it shows. Like damn

If anyone has any recommendations give them to me please!

Gladly! The pieces on this list aren’t limited to specifically anti-colonial science fiction and fantasy, but they do center related and relevant topics, themes, etc.

  • Anything by NK Jemisin. She is the best speculative fiction writer of her generation and probably the best speculative fiction writer alive. She is easily one of the best writers working right now, across all genres. That’s not hyperbole. She deserves all the hype.
  • Anything by Octavia Butler. She needs no introduction. Her short fiction is incredible; “Bloodchild” is one of the pieces that inspired me to write.
  • An Unkindness of Ghosts by Rivers Solomon. Excellent. Just read it.
  • The Radiant Emperor duology by Shelley P. Chan. It broke my heart and it’ll break yours.
  • Babel by RF Kuang. You’ve probably already heard of this book because Harper Voyager marketed the shit out of it and was right to do so. It’s very, very good. Kuang writes a compulsively readable story, that’s for sure.
  • The Empress of Salt and Fortune by Nghi Vo.
  • So Long Been Dreaming: Post-Colonial Science Fiction and Fantasy (anthology) edited by Nalo Hopkinson.
  • Dark Matter: A Century of Speculative Fiction from the African Diaspora (anthology) edited by Nalo Hopkinson.

Severely underhyped books of assorted speculative genres:

  • The Blood Trials by NE Davenport. Given the current chokehold romantasy has on the public it’s insane to me that this book hasn’t sold a billion copies.
  • The Vanished Birds by Simon Jimenez. It’ll change you.
  • The Tiger’s Daughter by K. Arsenault Rivera.
  • The Lesson by Caldwell Turnbull.

Read widely. Read diversely. People of the Caucasian persuasion need to stop getting pissy when the story doesn’t immediately center them and they don’t automatically relate to everything the character says and does and is. Just let yourself get swept in the story—even if it touches on (gasp!) racism—and maybe, just maybe, it’ll reveal something to you.

Or maybe not! Marginalized sff authors do not have to and should not have to educate their readers. But if I see one more white person complain about how Black characters are fundamentally annoying because they complain too much I’m going to fling myself into the sun

Thanks for coming to my ted talk I didn’t want to do it but here I am

Oh! Please read EVERYTHING EVER WRITTEN by P. Djèlí Clark y'all! but start with this book first!

This is the epitome of Black Steampunk. It so refreshing to see science fiction written and just beautifully and authentic displaying of black culture(locations, language, practices, belie, ect) like black culture is extremely relevant and refreshingly written in this story. It even has some thrill of historical/ancestors revenge, along with messages of life and healing in it. It has all kinds of Black diaspora and queer rep in it too!

try also the House of Shattered Wings by Aliette de Bodard x

We all know this by now obviously but it still makes me reel when I’m doing something as trivial as driving by a middle school and I see the windowpanes plastered with at least 3 pictures of the Israeli flag and all over my city are pictures of Israeli hostages and not even one (1) single photo of one of the thousands on thousands of Palestinian children killed… from a very young age Americans are taught that one Israeli life is worth that of the endless Palestinians buried under rubble unidentified. And people want to perpetuate this behavior by encouraging others to ignore Palestinian fundraisers or label them as scams

Israeli death is a travesty, an abject injustice, an atrocity that must’ve never happened—while Arab deaths are something that just is. Something that should never be brought into question because suffering is inherent to our identity

Reminder to keep the momentum going and donate anything you can to Ola’s fundraiser. Ola’s entire future was torn from her hands when the iof bombed her house and displaced both her and her family, throwing a major wrench in her plans to finish grad school. Now they’re between tents in North Gaza, practically starving while waiting for the border to open, and her campaign has been stalling for months. Please donate whatever amount you can to this campaign—and please boost this y’all. Looking the other way is so fucked up when these people have practically provided us literal photos of their suffering. Ola’s fundraiser is really close to completion so please do what you can do they can reach their goal and afford evacuating to safety

$2,370 more to raise until Ola and her family can get their evacuation fund!! This is an extremely attainable goal, please help this young teacher and her family get funded.

how do you choose who to donate to? it always feels like such an awful choice, everyone needs it so badly but i can only give to a few people at a time with what i have. how does anyone choose who to help, or how much to give each person?

gazafunds.com loads a randomized fundraiser for people with this anxiety

you could also buy esims for Gazans or donate to Gaza Municipality Project

I get it, I really do, but I feel like ppl w decision paralysis related to Gazans are also suffering from a kind of non-malignant egotism

“who do I decide to give it to? everyone needs help! I can’t help them all!”

You’re not the only person they’re asking!!!!!

If you choose one person to help that day, a bunch of other ppl choose others

stopping to overthink your inflated importance as an individual versus one in many is what’s giving you paralysis

the more you burden yourself as an incapable hero the less you all act as a group– which is the exact answer you’re looking for

fkn close your eyes, scroll on OOB and donate to whoever you click on first

you’re not god, it’s not your job to save everyone

JUST DO SOMETHING

Lol  it’s all ‘we should center the voices of the victims of Imperial core’ till people here realize that this has to be a sustained effort that would need the same energy from beginning to end, no matter how many days, months or years go by. Really  crazy that just when so many Gazans are on the site trying to reach out to us, Palestine seems to be falling out of relevance because the coverage of protests in the imperial core has begun to die down

I laugh but it is terrifying how American hegemony works that we can track it in real time through the dwindling of donations to gfms across the platform. Gazan families want to talk to us about all that they have lost, at great costs to themselves so that they can get some much needed help, and what they find instead, is an allyship that is easily influenced by a hegemony where western voices speaking up about any of this matter the most, and when that dies down, they struggle to find a sympathetic ear, resulting in the support being whittled away to almost nothing right in front of their eyes.

You are really only proving that zionists were right when they said that people would eventually forget and stop caring. It is going to be 11 months of GENOCIDE- how does it not galvanize us to speaking up MORE? I don’t know how you all are not realizing that should a time come when we truly stop talking about Palestine, we would stand complicit in normalizing these crimes against humanity!

So please don’t stop talking!! Don’t let Palestine fall out of relevance, the second western media stops talking about it in the mainstream. And please, please boost and donate to the fundraisers.

My friend, Siraj ( @siraj2024 ) is struggling to get steady donations for the past 2 months. Recently with his extended family getting displaced due to the violence of the IOF, his fundraiser is now having to support FIVE FAMILIES belonging to his married siblings and parents instead of just the one. I cannot overstate how urgently he needs these funds right now.

He needs to get to 65k by Monday, but is currently only at $61,524 CAD

He managed to get $248 CAD in 12 hours and this is terrifying to him!!

Please keep sharing and donating. Siraj and every other Gazan need your support now more than ever.

I want to make sure this information gets through to everyone: the racist genocidal German state could deport Bilal @bilal-salah0 within the next week, after he lost his job and home, heaping cruelty after cruelty onto this young man who has been working nonstop to provide for his family facing genocide in Gaza.

he’s supporting 18 people there, including 8 kids under age 16. now Bilal needs to finish fundraising for his family before August 15th when he could be deported. that’s one week from today.

Bilal needs to raise €25000 in the next 7 days to make sure his family has enough to survive if he can no longer fundraise. Bilal shared this dire news with us on Tuesday, but in spite of thousands of notes on @malcriada, @appsa, and others’ posts about the situation, the campaign received only €3650 in the last two days.

it seems like people are somehow not seeing the urgency and severity of the situation. donations also slowed over the past week because Bilal couldn’t be online to promote the campaign, and because of the recent racist attacks against fundraising efforts here. there’s a lot of ground to make up and very little time, but we can do it. please donate any amount you can, those €5s add up if enough people help. reblog this as well as the posts linked above, and tell your friends and social media outside tumblr. and most importantly, seriously, please donate whatever you can. we need to come through for Bilal’s family now, not later. please take this seriously, please help them.

August 8th: €75,467 / €100,000

plain text and tags under the cut

€79,073 / €100,000

€79,483 / €100,000

€410 raised since the last update. please keep it up, i would not keep harping on about this if it wasn’t incredibly urgent. i don’t want Bilal to potentially lose what he worked so hard for.

To any Europeans reading, please consider sharing this fundraiser with your friends and family.

It’s for @bilal-salah0, a 22 year old Palestinian refugee who, while trying to raise funds for his family in Gaza, is facing the possibility of an imminent deportation from Germany. It might happen as early as next week, which is why his fundraiser is so urgent.

I of course encourage everyone who can to share and donate, but I especially think us Europeans, with the current and terrifying uptick in anti-immigration rhetoric and violence, have an extra responsibility of helping Bilal.

For more information on Bilal’s current situation, please read this post from one of his friends.

[Twitter screenshot] harry @kthejutokes don’t need to speak norwegian to get the gist of that article Imagine from a Dagbladet article, what a headline that reads: For et shitshow Årets Eurovision har gått til helvete. Det er først og fremst EBU sin feil. [Twitter date] 14:21 - 11. May 24 - 64.1k viewsALT

Translation: What a shitshow. This years Eurovision has gone to hell. And it’s first and foremost the EBU’s fault.

Also, excerpt from the same article:

Throughout the course of the Eurovision Song Contest, the EBU has acted as if they live in a parallel universe. Eurovision is one thing, the world outside something else. The EBU has stuck its head in the sand. Shoved the problem under the rug. Held their hands over their ears and shouted LALALALALA. They appear to have done everything they can to pretend it’s possible to hold an apolitical event in a world that’s on fire. We have come together to be “united by music”, they say, but the sharpshooters on Malmö’s rooftops have nothing to do with us!

In its struggle to remain apolitical, the EBU has become like a small fascist state in itself, where the artists’ space for expression and action has been reduced as much as the undergarments of the Spanish dancers.

It is reprehensible.

Reminder again to BOYCOTT EUROVISION 🇵🇸

Don’t watch, don’t vote.

image

this isn’t the fucking US presidential election. there is no ‘anti’ israel vote, that’s not how ESC works

and even if there somehow was a way we could all collectively vote to stop israel from winning, all we’d be doing is banding together to save eurovison’s reputation and legitimacy. it would do nothing for palestine

if israel ends up winning, then that’s EBU’s problem, not ours

don’t give these ghouls your money
