The relevance of the article is determined by the need for a systematic description of the national-cultural characteristics of individual peoples (in particular, Mari) and fixing the composition of the identified ethno-differentiating components of mentality, which demonstrate the identity of ethnic cultures. The article presents new data on the systemic nature of the Mari mentality, which core is a subsystem of images, symbols and values, summarizing the results of the mental functions of perception and thinking, reflected in folklore texts and are actively used in the daily life of Mari society. Materials and Methods. 600 conspiracy-spell texts, extracted from various sources, are considered in the framework of system theory using a combination of linguistic, traditional folkloristic approaches and quantitative methods. The algorithm for studying ethnic mentality, shown in the article, makes it possible to use the theoretical basis and methodological base in the stu...

The authors use a complex system of techniques and stratagems applied to 6840 proverbs and sayings chosen from specialized dictionaries printed in the corresponding regions. A methodological basis resting on theory of systems analysis makes use of componential and contextual types of research as well as quantitative evaluation with a dichotomous method leading to an identification of four groups of ethnic values. In the hierarchy of value orientations special attention is paid to intolerable vices and moral flaws. The order of the investigation includes several steps among which the process of determining values, called „factors‟, from paroemias with the help of semantic analysis is of primary importance. Quantitative evaluation showed eight dominant values common to the two easte...

The aim of this article is to reveal, describe and classify types of space constituting a system of spatial images and symbols. The significance of the verbal charms as a source of information is beyond doubt and lies in the fact that verbal magic formulas are original, statistically undoubted material that has been created and used for centuries on the territories inhabited by the ethnic group. The methodological basis of the research includes the use of a number of provisions of the theory of system analysis (text is a systemic, a hierarchically structured unit, consisting of a number of elements), which is supplemented by the use of factor (types of space) and statistical types of analysis. They are combined with linguistic methods of semantic research: method of vocabulary analysis, componential and contextual analysis. Imaginary and real actions necessary to achieve the goals of verbal for...

The texts of charms represent a rare phenomenon due to the long history of their existence and their peculiar language features. At the same time, the tradition of magical texts can still be observed today. A sample of approximately 500 incantations from different sources allowed them to be divided into six groups. They differ in compositional structure, temporal characteristics, and expressive and stylistic devices. The latter is the object of study here. The research shows that among various expressive means and stylistic devices, the incantations are rich in syntactic stylistic means and folklore tropes. This choice of means can be explained by the 'laws' of oral presentation of magical texts and their pragmatic aims.

The research was carried out with the help of a complex technique applied to 2100 songs from different song collections. Mari colour symbols have never before been the object of research. The process of investigation included several steps. The most important of these was the semantic analysis that helped to discern 2000 mentions of four main spectre colours as well as white, black, silver, and golden. Quantitative data evaluation singled out a dominant group by a dichotomous method, applying the principle of simple majority employed in mathematical statistics. The same technique divided the other colour symbols into complementary, auxiliary, and insignificant groups. The results of an investigation into ethnic symbology are also shown graphically. The main reconstructed meanings of colour in the analysed songs denote such emotions as joy, wonder, astonishment, grief, melancholy, some aesthetic ideals, ethical vices, as well as people's character and appearance.

The authors apply a complex technique to 13820 proverbs taken from specialized dictionaries published in the four corresponding republics. The strategy involves the use of semantic analysis as well as quantitative evaluation carried out with the help of a linear correlation coefficient. The algorithm of the investigation consists of several steps. The most important stage includes the process of discerning values, called "factors", from proverbs and sayings with the help of componential and contextual types of analysis. Statistical methods revealed the most important eight values common to the four eastern Finno-Ugrian ethnic groups which are arranged in a descending order of their number and frequency of occurrence. The findings of an investigation into traditional axiology are also presented with the help of graphical metalanguage-as the tabulated data and in the form of diagrams.

Bottlenecks in the Open-Access System: Voices from Around the Globe
Journal of Librarianship and Scholarly Communication, Mar 31, 2014

However, there are potential pitfalls of the so-called “Gold” open-access (OA) route, in which author-paid publication charges cover the costs of production and publication.
Gold OA plans in which author charges are required may not solve the access problem, but rather may shift the access
barrier from reader to writer. Under such plans, everyone may be free to read papers, but it may still be prohibitively expensive to publish them. In a scholarly community that is increasingly global, spread over more and more regions and countries of the world, these publication access barriers may be quite significant.
In the present paper, a global suite of colleagues in academe joins this debate. The group of colleagues, a network of researchers active in scholarly publishing, spans four continents and multiple disciplines in the natural sciences, humanities, and social sciences, as well as diverse political and economic situations. We believe that this global
sampling of researchers can provide the nuance and perspective necessary to grasp this complex problem. The group was assembled without an attempt to achieve global coverage through random sampling.
This contribution differs from other approaches to the open-access problem in several fundamental ways. (A) It is scholar-driven, and thus can represent the ‘other side of the coin’ of scholarly communication. (B) It focuses on narrative report, where scholars were free to orient their responses as they saw fit, rather than being confined to binary or scalar choices. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, (C) it distinguishes among institutions and countries and situations, highlighting inequalities of access among wealthy and economically-challenged nations, and also within
countries depending on the size and location of particular institutions.

They are defined with the help of a system of techniques and stratagems applied to Mari folklore texts of different genres. One difficulty in the analysis lies in the absence of parameters by which one can assess and interpret spatial images and archetypes. In the article an approach that allows a solution to this problem has been offered: psychological space perception factors are introduced quantitatively showing their ranking. In the hierarchy of perception factors three out of six psychological parameters give the space a dual evaluation. As a result of investigation there is a ranked classification of space types which have the paramount importance for the ethnos.
