updated pinned post and commissions

This is my blog for The Silmarillion and The Children of Húrin! Requests and asks of all kinds are open and welcome. Even if you’re unsure if something has been asked before! I love infodumping and will be glad to link to an answer or answer again! I did a list of the kinds of requests I do

areas of interest to me are world building (environment/nature/society/culture/etc) of Angband itself, Beleriand/Middle Earth and Valinor! Please ask questions about this! I now have a masterlist for environmental world building here and one for societal world building here and my Newest Masterlist: Aerin and post Nírnaeth Hithlum HCs with other CoH lists

I am autistic. I get over excited so sometimes come off as rambling, awkward or repetitive. Please tell me if I’m interacting in a way that’s annoying or if I’m talking over you. I do love complimenting other’s works and talking with others so feel free to message me!

note about commissions

(Updated!)Tengwar commissions! $1.00 to $3.00 My kofi (if you have questions about why I link these feel free to ask. I also do take commissions for writing or world building/research though I am slow at times. Here’s an example of commissioned world building! I typically charge five dollars for world building/research and honestly pwyw for writing

Elven word of the day 282/?

Coll from Sindarin

Meaning “cloak, mantle”

Element of course in Thingol meaning grey mantle

Quenya cognate: collo

This word was derived from the primitive elvish root col meaning to wear or carry

Note: coll in Sindarin is a homonym. There is also coll meaning hollow. This derived from the primitive elvish word kuldā meaning the same

Ossiriand, the land of seven rivers, is a realm in Eastern Beleriand, bordered on one side by the Blue Mountains and the river Gelion on the other. Parts of Ossiriand were among the only parts of Beleriand to survive past the first age. From the River Gelion ran six more rivers from west to east, ending in springs and streams in the mountains. I headcanon it to be a land diverse in ecosystems, we know of the elm trees Treebeard spoke of in The Lord of the Rings; I primarily took inspiration from East Asia and parts of Northern Europe. I have another board here of Tol Galen, the river island in Ossiriand that Beren and Lúthien lived in after their return

I also headcanon it to be an eerie place but I’ll go into later

I imagine that Húrin in his post Angband years, sometimes feels that the mists that rose from Sirion due to the power of Ulmo and shielded him and Huor from the orcs that pursued them as teenagers, was an act of cruelty rather than a blessing*

*(Actually, because I’m incapable of just posting a passing thought without rambling, I need to add that in The Wanderings of Húrin, Húrin is incredibly bitter and angry at everything but reserves some amount of respect for the Valar and the idea at least of some of the elven kings. At the very least he’s furious when the people of Brethil invoke both at his trial and considers the invocation offensive to the Valar and elven kings. But anyways…)

Also for some reason my tag for the wanderings of húrin is completely broken and the tag in my search gives different posts than clicking on the tag here. If anyone has advice please help…

I made this post about how meaningful it was to me that Morwen and Aerin’s relationship predated the final version of The Children of Húrin and indeed predated any details regarding Morwen’s other relationships but perhaps just as importantly to me is how consistent throughout the various versions of the Narn is Aerin being such a close confidant and being the only one to know where Morwen is; especially as it’s emphasized in both the final children of Húrin and Silmarillion that no one else has any idea what becomes of Morwen.

I love noting what details Tolkien keeps consistently throughout his drafts; Maedhros always loses a hand, Túrin is always fostered by the elves and Aerin has always known where Morwen went and ensured her escape, even before Tolkien was fully decided upon their names

the silmarillion musing and meta the children of húrin BoLT morwen aerin mentioned maedhros none but aerin knew where

Another detail from The Children of Húrin I really love is after Morwen essentially forces Mablung to help her cross the river Sirion, they travel to the twilight Meres where there are raft like ferries that the elves of Doriath used to travel to and from Nargothrond, likely passing through the Valley of Willows (Nan Tathren), as that’s where Sirion meets the river Narog. Both the Twilit Meres and Nan Tathren are notable for their waters being especially important to Ulmo. Indeed it’s at the former where Finrod and Turgon receive their visions of their kingdoms.

Anyways it’s just such a cool detail that explains much of how relations between Nargothrond and Menengroth were conducted and, perhaps even more importantly, that tells us that residents of Doriath visited their kin for pleasure and connection, not just trade and diplomacy. Obviously at this point in The Children of Húrin, Nargothrond is destroyed; the ferries have been out of use for some time.

Nut Trees in Beleriand and their uses part one

Flora, fauna, geography and environment of Arda Masterlist, societal world building Masterlist

This list encompasses true nuts and some culinary nuts! I’ll do other culinary nuts and nut trees of Valinor in separate posts!

Note: this is based on a canon climate of Beleriand but I’m always happy to publish ideas based on other climates or ecosystems; my personal headcanons for climate and ecology change constantly🪶

Also thank you so much to @veilder , @stainlesssteellocust and @rana-temporaria for your encouragement 💙💙
