Every story—whether it’s a fanfic, a novel, or even a moving idea scribbled in a notebook carries something of its writer. Some stories are escapism, places where people can build worlds free from the struggles of reality. Others, like Sleepless in Busan, are something else: a reflection of life itself, of the moments that shape us in ways we don’t even realize. The weight of past regrets, the way we carry them of others in our hearts, how a single phrase or act of kindness can alter the course of someone’s life. There are countless stories out there like Sleepless in Busan, not in the sense of plot or setting, but in the way they feel irl. The way they capture what it means to be human irl and that’s why certain stories/fics stay with us long after we’ve finished reading. They remind us of ourselves, of the people we’ve met, the relationships we’ve had, the moments that shaped us in ways we didn’t expect, or just how much we enjoyed reading it. That's just how I feel.
I get so invested when I shape [my] long fics. It’s not words on a screen; it’s pieces of me stitched into every sentence. Every time a character struggles with something, there’s a little bit of my own thoughts, my own understanding of the world, tucked in there. I don’t just write about emotions but also feel them. If a scene is about longing, I’m right there, lost in the ache of it. If it’s about hope, I’m rooting for the character like they’re my best friend. Even when I think I’m just writing a story, I end up realizing—oh no, this is me. My thought process, my way of seeing relationships, my fears, my little joys. It’s all there. Like, I could be writing a scene where someone is hesitating before knocking on a door, and suddenly I’m like—wait, is this about that time I almost backed out of something important? And then I just sit there for a second, staring at the screen, questioning my entire existence. And also, the moment when the story starts writing itself. When the characters stop feeling like constructs and start feeling like people—like they have their own minds, and I’m just here watching them live their lives. That’s when I know I’m deep in it. That’s when I know this story isn’t just something I’m creating—it’s something that’s changing me while I write it.
At the end of the day, every fic, every story, has little bits and pieces of the person who wrote it. The way they view love, or regret, or hope. The way they see the world or want to see the world. And maybe that’s why storytelling is so powerful, it’s also the person behind them leaving little pieces of themselves behind for someone else to find.

oh my god cel you get it so much. sleepless in busan is perhaps my most humane work; in the sense that all the characters are deeply flawed, deeply wounded, but at the end of the day, they still manage to carry on to the next, because is that not what means to be human? to live from one day to the next, regardless of how difficult it might be.
i dont know why i sat down and wrote this story, beyond a simple; i just wanted someone to feel comfort through my words. i’m so glad you found that comfort through my words on paper <3

The first time you meet Seungcheol again, it’s in the dimly lit corner of your parish hall. Your mother drags you over to him like an offering, her fingers biting into your wrist as she beams up at him.

Seungcheol’s smile is gentle, his head dipping in a slight bow. “Of course,” he says, steady as a psalm. “It’s been a long time.”
