Given this reality, it becomes necessary to investigate the acquisition and utilisation of ICT skills by library professionals in some Nigerian academic libraries. The study was a descriptive survey research type. Questionnaire was used to collect data from a sample of 160 library professionals. Data collected were analysed using descriptive statistics (percentages). The study revealed that acquisition of ICT skills is imperative to its utilisation. The study also revealed that epileptic power supply was the greatest challenge of ICT in Nigerian academic libraries. Recommendations made among others include that the management of University libraries should attend to the problem of epileptic power supply by ensuring either a standby generator or inverters or solar power to ensure the continuity of work in the case of power outage and they should endeavour to provide adequate fund for the acquisition of appropriate ICTs.

They were faced with the probability of how libraries would function amidst employees calling for closures while seeking for safety and looking for how to activate open access e-resources, minding workers’ rights and copyright guidelines on these e-resources. Their perception on providing health information sensitization to their immediate community, the challenges and facing the change agenda was the focus of this paper. Respondents were drawn from different libraries for the survey which adopted qualitative research methodology through interviews. The data collected were thematically analyzed to answer the research questions. Findings indicated that librarians perceived the COVID-19 sensitization as a challenge that could be overwhelming, but achievable with support from stakeholders, the government and non-governmental agencies. Recommendations were that th...

However, literature has revealed that one of the biggest roles librarians can to play in the national response to the pandemic is that of information literacy specialist. This study, therefore, evaluated sensitization and promotion of information literacy on COVID-19 pandemic by librarians in Public University Libraries in SouthWestern Nigeria. The descriptive survey research design was used for the study. The data for the study was collected from librarians in Public University Libraries in SouthWestern Nigeria. A total of 315 librarians participated in the study through an online questionnaire due to the COVID-19 pandemic while 233 (74.0%) returned copies of filled questionnaire by the respondents was analysed. Frequency counts, percentages and mean were used to analyse the data collected. Librarians sensitized their communities through various ways on preventive COVID-19 information and used mobile phones and social media very effectively in disseminating preventive COVID-19 information. A significant relationship existed between sensitization and promotion of information literacy on COVID-19 pandemic by librarians. However, librarians were confronted with many challenges in promoting preventive COVID-19 information. It is therefore, recommended that librarians and other information stakeholders should put more efforts on sensitizing their communities about this COVID-19 pandemic, so as to reduce the high level of ignorance about the pandemic in the communities.

To elicit the necessary information, a questionnaire was randomly distributed to 200 students from 100-500 level and a response rate of 100% was achieved. Using simple percentage response rate to analyze the data, the results showed that only 21% of the respondents have poor reading culture, while majority of them (59.5%) read for interest only. The paper therefore recommended ways by which librarians; lecturers and parents can encourage undergraduates to read, to improve and to inculcate good reading culture. Introduction: The acquisition of knowledge for the development of man, society and nature does not arise from a vacuum. This can be done partly through formal training which involves mostly a; "determined, result oriented information processing efforts" by the individual, through reading (Ugwoke, 2004). Thus, besides being a ready source for acquisition of information, reading is an effort aimed at sifting received opinions in order to cope with the challenges of the everyday experiences. The word sifting is used because sometimes, received opinion may not be adequate for ones contemporary needs and interests. Since man's existence depends on ability to cope with the challenges of survival, it is important to develop the critical attitude to meeting them. This obviously makes the proper cultivation of reading culture impetrative. This is so not only because Holte (1998) avers that reading adds quality to human existence, empowers and emancipates man and society, but rather that reading creates the atmosphere that makes human freedom inevitable. Certainly, reading culture in a university like Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso will obviously have some problems.

An explosion of micro-and nano-fabrication, biomaterials, microfluidic, and other technologies potentially afford unprecedented opportunity to create microphysiological models of human liver, but engineering design principles for how to deploy these tools effectively towards specific applications, including how to define the essential constraints of any given application (including available sources of cells, acceptable cost, and user-friendliness) are still emerging. Arguably less appreciated is the parallel growth in computational systems biology approaches towards these same problemsparticularly, in parsing complex disease processes from clinical material, building models of response networks, and in how to interpret the growing compendium of data on drug efficacy and toxicology in patient populations. Here, we provide insight into how the complementary paths of "engineering liver"-experimental and computational-are beginning to interplay towards greater illumination of human disease states and technologies for drug development.

Although recent guidelines suggest that PPI-responders and non-responders were included in EoE, it is important to investigate the predictive factors of PPI- responsiveness. This study aimed to determine the rate of PPI- responders and compare the characteristics of PPI-responders and non-responders. Fifty-nine patients with esophageal eosinophilia received PPI therapy for eight weeks, and its efficacy was assessed. PPI- responsiveness was diagnosed based on the relief in symptoms and reduction of intraepithelial eosinophilic infiltration to <15 per high-power field (hpf) after PPI therapy. Multivariate analysis was performed to identify factors associated with PPI-responders. Of the 59 patients, 41 (69.5%) were diagnosed with PPI-responders. The rate of gastrointestinal (GI) screening in the indications for endoscopy was significantly h...

Recently, an EP1 receptor antagonist, ONO-8539, showed the reduction of TLESRs in monkeys. However, its effect on TLESRs in humans remains unclear. This study investigated the effect of ONO-8539 on postprandial TLESRs in healthy male subjects. Methods: Twenty-seven subjects participated in this placebo-controlled, cross-over study. The subjects received either placebo or ONO-8539 (450 mg) after a standardized breakfast. A 30-min basal recording was performed 4 h after drug administration. Subsequently, TLESR recordings were performed after a high-fat test meal for 3 h. The examination was repeated at least 7 days from the first evaluation for washout. Results: Thirteen patients were ultimately analyzed. The basal lower esophageal sphincter pressure was not different between the 2 groups (16.3 and 18.0 mm Hg for placebo and ONO-8539, respectively; p = 0.88). ONO-...

Clock genes harmonize circadian rhythms by their periodic expression and regulate several physiological functions. However, the association between clock genes and GERD is still unknown. We investigated whether reflux esophagitis affects circadian variability of clock genes in the esophagus and other organs using a rat reflux esophagitis model. Methods: Reflux esophagitis was induced in 7-week-old male Wistar rats. Sham-operated rats were used as controls. Rats were sacrificed at 09:00 (light period) and 21:00 (dark period) 3 days (acute phase) and 21 days (chronic phase) after induction of esophagitis. The expression levels of clock gene mRNAs such as Per1, Per2, Per3, Cry1, Cry2, Arntl, and Clock in the esophagus were investigated by qPCR. Arntl expression was examined in stomach, small intestine, colon, and liver tissues. Serum melatonin and IL-6 levels were measured by ELISA. Results: Histological examination of reflux esophagitis mainly revealed epithelial defects with marked inflammatory cell infiltration in the acute phase, and mucosal thickening with basal cell hyperplasia in the chronic phase. Circadian variability of clock genes, except Cry1, was present in the normal esophagus, and was completely. CC-BY 4.0 International license was not certified by peer review) is the author/funder. It is made available under a disrupted in reflux esophagitis during the acute phase. The circadian variability of Per2, Per3, and Arntl returned to normal, but disruption of Per1, Cry2, and Clock was present in the chronic phase. Disruption of circadian variability of Arntl was observed in the esophagus, as well as in the stomach, small intestine, and liver tissues in reflux esophagitis during the acute phase. There were no significant differences in serum melatonin and IL-6 levels between control and reflux esophagitis animals in both acute and chronic phases. Conclusion: Disruption to circadian variability of clock genes may play a role in the pathogenesis of GERD. .

Esophageal adenocarcinoma arises from an inflammatory condition called Barrett's esophagus, which is caused by gastroesophageal reflux. We hypothesized that esophageal microbiome plays a role in carcinogenesis of esophageal adenocarcinoma. We investigated whether alteration of microbiome using antibiotics affects the development of esophageal adenocarcinoma in a rat model. Seven-week-old male Wistar rats which had undergone esophagojejunostomy were divided into control (n = 21) and antibiotic groups (n = 22) at 21 weeks after surgery. Control animals were given drinking water, while the other group was given penicillin G and streptomycin in drinking water until rats were killed at 40 weeks after operation. Incidence rates of Barrett's esophagus and adenocarcinoma in each group were evaluated by histological analysis. DNA was extracted from a portion of the distal esophagus, and the ...

The study used spidergram design of 5Ws and 1H (who, what, where, why, when, and how). Instruments used were online questionnaire and FGD. The participants were librarians in the #WikiAfLibs Cohort 1 drawn from Anglophone countries. It was discovered that live sessions, office hours, and learning resources were mostly favored among the activities (39% and 33%, respectively). Respondents used personal data subscriptions (75%) and received the training from their homes. Some have joined Wikipedia communities in their countries and have received funds. They struggled with cost of data subscription, fear of internet disruption, and not meeting the deadline of the assignments. They agreed that Wikipedia would give librarians more visibility, enrich services, and build partnerships. The findings imply that librarians' full embrace of Wikipedia will add value to information services. ...

It is aimed at determining the documentation and use of indigenous knowledge in primary healthcare by practitioners of alternative healthcare given the dearth of scholarly works in this area in library and information studies. The descriptive survey research design and stratified random sampling techniques were used for the study. The study reveals that practitioners of alternative healthcare use indigenous knowledge in the provision of primary healthcare in treating various health challenges including maternal healthcare and HIV/AIDS, documenting their indigenous knowledge through the forms of writing in books, audio recording, video taping, drawing, photographing and story telling. Adequate documentation of indigenous knowledge in various formats that can make it accessible for use in managing diseases has significant implications for facilitating alternative healthcare’s ...

Alternative healthcare practitioners play major roles in primary healthcare delivery in some societies like Nigeria and their roles in traditional medicine healthcare system are acknowledged. However, the volumes of existing studies were largely concentrated on examining the use of modern traditional medicinal plants, thus ignoring such valuable aspect concerning its preservation by alternative healthcare practitioners in primary healthcare. This study, therefore, investigated the role of libraries in the preservation of indigenous knowledge among the alternative healthcare practitioners in Nigeria. This paper employed the descriptive survey research design to examining related issues that many scholars are wont to ignore. Stratified random sampling technique was employed to select the res...

The Taro Yamane’s sample size formula was used to determine sample size of 276 respondents from the total population of the study and systematic random sampling was used to select the respondents across the faculties and levels of study. The data collected were analysed and interpreted, using descriptive statistics of mean, standard deviation, frequency, percentage and weighted mean score while the hypothesis was tested with simple regression analysis at 0.05 level of significance. The result of the analysis showed that the level of use of eresources among postgraduates in Olusegun Oke library, Lautech, Nigeria was low. Findings also revealed that postgraduates are able to access e-resources at a high extent through the library OPAC homepage. Consequently, the analysis confirmed that the postgraduates use e-resources for different purposes. The challenges fac...

Acquiring, processing and providing access to recorded information are some of the reasons why cultural heritage institutions exist. The functions of the African Heritage Research Library and Cultural Centre (AHRLC), Adeyipo, the National Archive, Abeokuta branch and the Ife Museum of Natural History are no different. They are cultural heritage instituitions with collections of African historical antecedents, repositories of natural objects and African heritage research library dating back to 1950, 1992 and 1971 respectively. That this heritage is worth preserving is the theme of this study. Although, some current preservation methods in place are indigenous, they are lacking in many instances the risk management expertise, focus and coordinated planning. A lot more needs to be done by way of providing the necessary resources, and the appropriate facilities supported by comprehensive institutional polices...
