how i’m handling my students using AI to write papers:
-don’t accuse them on using AI from the get-go and instead ask them to informally define all the huge words that they used in their essay which i know they don’t know the meaning of
-ask to see their original file where they “wrote” the essay. go to version history to see if it was just copy and pasted and then just edited a bit. i keep an eye out for the shit like “certainly! here’s an essay about….”
-if they own up to it, they can re-do the assignment for a higher grade even if there will be an automatic penalty. if they don’t, i process it like plagiarism and get my supervisor involved.
And this is much better than the immediate accusations. Some students have a good vocabulary. Stop accusing them of faking their essays without proof, and this is a good way to check.

I have a theory that somewhere back up the line gandalf fucked a took. This sounds like complete crack but hear me out. The tooks are rumored to have “fairy blood” which in LOTR terms means either elves or maia. There is an ancestor who’s unusually tall and many of them are noted to live unusually long lives unless they meet with illness or injury, same as the numenorians did. They don’t hve extra pointy ears and elves don’t have a special interest in the line. But who DOES have a special interest in looking after tooks (and bilbo who is a took on his mother’s side/his adopted son frodo)? Gandalf. That dude is ALWAYS fussing over some silly little guy. He regularly brought the old took birthday presents.
Back in the day some bold hobbitess decided to climb that old man and ever since then gandalf has been looking after his line of tiny crazy bastards and no one will convince me otherwise.

okay I am begging people to understand that it is not “planned obsolescence” or “corporate greed” for manufacturers to stop selling things because genuinely better technologies become available. I just had someone arguing with me that they should be able to buy a new nickel-cadmium battery for their 25-year-old cordless vacuum. NiCd batteries were outlawed a decade ago for very good reasons. if you really want to have the same effect as using one you can just go out and shoot 10 people with Bullets That Give You Cancer and then rip out your own kidney
Dreaming up an Obsolecence scale between ‘we intentionally want to make our customers buy new things bc profit’ to 'yeah so we don’t do that any more because that would be intentionally giving kids cancer’
Planned Obsolecence: This thing could last ten years or more but then no one would buy a new product from us for ten years, which will eat into our profits. Luckily we can make our product incrementally worse to force people to buy new ones before that ten years is up.
Scheduled Obsolecence: As less and less people use this old method, it becomes more prohibitively expensive to keep supporting those few people, and resources are better spent on trying to help them transition to the newer, cheaper technology - as a result we will completely stop supporting the old method in a few years.
Regular Obsolecence: No one beside a few weirdo hobbiest would use the old method because we’ve just developed affordable, more effective technology to achieve the same thing. There’s a reason no one sends a telegram any more.
What the Fuck Obsolecence: Yeah so no we don’t do the Coca Cola with cocaine in it any more for the same reason we stopped treating headaches with leeches and arsenic.

the difference for me is that planned obselences is making or letting things get shittier over time to force people onto a new thing withbsome level of deniability, but enforced obsolences is immediate and undisguised.
A prime example of what im talking about would be blizzard shutting down overwatch despite its active player base for the sole reason of forcing people into overwatch 2
started watching this japanese show where they take in requests and they try to help out with whatever the request is. and in this one the guy says that when he was in middle school, he always heard the girl across the street playing her piano, and although he only met her in person a few times, listening to her play her usual song was a great comfort to him growing up, especially getting to hear her slowly get better at playing.
the guy now was an adult and taking a break from college, and began to feel really lost in life, and he kept thinking back to when he was in middle school and hearing her play the piano every day. so his request was to hear her play it again. and he and the show’s crew literally go back to his old place, and miraculously the girl still lives in that same house across the street, and even more miraculously the people who currently live where he used to allow him to go back to his old room where he used to listen to her play. and they all agree to recreate his middle school memory for him.
the girl comes home from her part-time job and she plays the piano, although she tells them it’s been 4 years since she’s ever played and is worried she won’t sound good, and the guy sits by the window, and he just listens. and like. just imagining reliving that moment when you were younger, listening to a near-stranger play a song across the street every day, feeling a little less lost because of it, and returning to that as an adult when you need it most and everyone being kind enough to let you savor it again even just for a moment… i wanted to start bawling i wont lie. this is the song she played. im going to go lie down about the humanity of it all

Knight Scoop) and if you have a vpn you can watch it on netflix. the guy did get to meet the pianist herself in person and thank her for playing such a beautiful song all those times, which is why his request was to hear her play it again.

I’m nearly in tears. All the mental and physical pain and suffering that me and other Koreans have gone through waiting for his ousting has finally been paid off.
It was NEVER easy. I can’t believe how many obstacles there actually were to come to this conclusion. Yoon and his cronies, his ruling far-right conservative party, and their blind supporters never gave up till the last minute. They took numerous cards in their sleeves to prevent this glorious day from happening.
