In today's dominant modes of pedagogy, questions about issues of race, class, gender, sexuality, colonialism, religion, and other social dynamics are rarely asked. Questions about the social spaces where pedagogy takes place -in schools, media, and corporate think tanks -are not raised. And they need to be.

This book invites readers to explore the critical interruptions occasioned by queer pedagogies. Building on earlier scholarly work in this area, as well as pedagogical production arising out of queer activism, the chapters in this volume examine a broad range of themes as they collectively grapple with the meaning and practice of queer pedagogy across different contexts. In this way, "Queer Pedagogies: Theory, Praxis, Politics" provides a glance at new ways of thinking about and acting on contemporary educational topics and debates situated at the intersection of queer studies and education. In taking up the concept of queer pedagogy, the volume provides ample opportunities for scholars, educators, activists, and other cultural workers to critically engage with ongoing questions of theory, praxis, and politics.

Series Mission Statement: LGBTQ social, cultural, and political issues have become a defining feature of twenty-first century life, transforming on a global scale any number of institutions, including the institution of education. Situated within the context of these major transformations, this series is home to the most compelling, innovative, and timely scholarship emerging at the intersection of queer studies and education. Across a broad range of educational topics and locations, books in this series incorporate lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and intersex categories, as well as scholarship in queer theory arising out of the postmodern turn in sexuality studies. The series is wide-ranging in terms of disciplinary/theoretical perspectives and methodological approaches, and will include and illuminate much needed intersectional scholarship. Always bold in outlook, the series also welcomes projects that challenge any number of normalizing tendencies within academic scholarship—from works that move beyond established frameworks of knowledge production within LGBTQ educational research to works that expand the range of what is institutionally defined within the field of education as relevant queer studies scholarship.

This book examines, within the context and concerns of education, Foucault’s reflections on friendship in his 1981 interview “Friendship as a Way of Life.” In the interview, Foucault advances the notion of a homosexual ascesis based on experimental friendships, proposing that homosexuality can provide the conditions for inventing new relational forms that can engender a homosexual culture and ethics, “a way of life,” not resembling institutionalized codes for relating. The contributors to this volume draw from Foucault’s reflections on ascesis and friendship in order to consider a range of topics and issues related to critical studies of sexualities and genders in education. "Michel Foucault and Sexualities and Genders in Education: Friendship as Ascesis" opens a dialogue for researchers, scholars, and educators interested in exploring the importance and relevance of Foucault’s reflections on friendship for studies of schooling and education.

Over a wide range of educational topics, contexts, and locations, "Routledge Critical Studies in Gender and Sexuality in Education" showcases scholarly work across all areas of the study of genders and sexualities in education. The series welcomes theoretically informed scholarship, including critical, feminist, queer, trans, postcolonial, and intersectional perspectives and encourages creative and innovative methodological approaches. Proposals dealing with critical policy analysis, as it relates to gender and sexuality studies in education, are also invited. The series is committed to publishing scholarly monographs, both sole and co-authored, and edited collections.

This book advances a broad constellation of critical concepts situated within the field of queer studies and education. Collectively, the concepts take up a cross-section of scholarship that speaks to various political, epistemological, theoretical, methodological, and pedagogical concerns. The “concepts approach” with its accessible and non-imposing format, a distinctive element of the volume, will appeal to educators when introducing students to complex discourse and ideas in the field, and scholars will find the volume’s breadth of coverage, including the wide range of theoretical perspectives and methodological approaches taken up across the chapter essays, useful to think with for their specific research projects. Given the ongoing global centrality of sociocultural and political developments related to the topic of LGBTQ in the twenty-first century, the concepts in this volume, and the issues raised by each, will have wide international appeal among researchers, scholars, educators, students, and activists working at the intersection of queer studies and education.

"Queer Studies and Education: An International Reader" explores how the category queer, as a critical stance or set of perspectives, contributes to opportunities individually and collectively for advancing queer social justice within the context and concerns of schooling and education. The collection takes up this general goal by presenting a cross-section of international perspectives on queer studies in education to demonstrate commonalities, differences, uncertainties, or pluralities across a diverse range of national contexts and topics, drawing a heightened awareness of heterodominance and heteropatriarchy, and to conceptualize non-normative and non-essentialist imaginings for more inclusive educational environments. Collectively, the chapters critically engage with heteronormativity and normativity more generally as a political spectrum, over a broad range of formal and informal sites of education, and against a backdrop of critiques of liberalism and neoliberalism as the frameworks through which ‘achievable’ social change and belonging are fostered, particularly within educational settings. Taken together, the chapters assembled in "Queer Studies and Education" invite researchers, scholars, educators, activists, and other cultural workers to examine the multiplicity of contemporary (international) work in queer studies and education with readers’ interpretations of queer’s deployment across the chapters forming the compass for which to arrive at fresh insights and forms of queer critical praxis.
