Day 2/Overall reflections on #ReimaginED at Woodleigh School
Despite being less than 2 days, the learning experiences over this time were marked by deep reflection and authentic connection with everyone there. I was struck by the use of reflection, grounding and checking in protocols that were actively used in the sessions, modelling the importance of slowing down and actively reflecting on our own learning, notably Mette Miriam Rakel Böll Dr Richard Owens FRSA Mignon Weckert Andrea Downie
A few event key themes:
- Active hope: as Dr Jane Goodall has long advocated, hope is not passive, it is a space we intentionally step into, despite what we might see around us, or are experiencing. Active hope isn't rainbows and unicorns, it's an conscious choice we make to 'step up'. It is cyclical; action builds hope and hope builds action, they feed, propel and nurture each other. Check out Cool.org resources and research in this space. Thx to Jamie Gerlach Michael Anderson for a fun and experiential session on activating #CriticalHope
- Regenerative spaces, experiences and learning. This concept was referenced multiple times across the conference and I have long been inspired (and had my thinking challenged) by Benjamin Freud, Ph.D. Linkedin posts (follow him for great provocations and reflections).
- Hayley McQuire grounded session showing us that there are many aspects of Australia's indigenous history (and present) we may not be aware of, we have much to learn, and a lot to listen to. As we begin to 'tell the truth', we must also try to understand others' truths through inclusive mindsets and practices.
- The way out is in: The momentum in education to start/be reminded to look 'inwards' as a way to move beyond doing/thinking alone. What we are doing as a planet isn't working, it's time for fundamental change, whether it's through frameworks such as #CompassionateSystems or the Inner Development Goals.
- Systems Thinking: systems matter and we need to bring this thinking to our classrooms to support learners understand the complexity of our worlds, globally and locally. Great to hear Andrea Downie shout out to the Compass Education tools!
Fantastic keynotes with provocative thinking (much discussion has ensured upon my return home) with Michael Fullan @Daniel Christian Wahl Mette Miriam Rakel Böll and a Woodleigh School student. Hamish Curry and Tara Merks interactive session brought the Circular Economy space to life through a fun perspective taking activity.
The final panel's reflection on the emerging trends for education suggested that educators that are brave enough to be vulnerable inspire their communities, that the best educators are subversive and that regenerative futures are where we need to be headed. p.s. loved that the thank you cards were student produced.
