Instead of expending any energy actively hunting, the whale just holds its mouth open wherever fish are being hunted by birds. To escape the birds, the fish try to hide in the whale’s mouth because it’s a darker area that looks like shelter.

…They’re turning into giant, sea-mammal pitcher plants.

I want to see what happens when you crack open the lid

I suspect that’s the bottom, not a lid.  You probably just submerge it right-side-up so it gets filled with water, turn it upside-down while still completely underwater, and then raise it up until just the lip is beneath the surface and carefully set it down on the blocks.  Easier than holding a lid on, probably.

I wonder what the fish think about it?  Do they notice the water isn’t shaped normally?

Look at the eyes on the deep sea fish IPNOPS. They’re some of the most modified eyes ever known in a vertebrate. It’s basically lost “eyeballs” in favor of huge, concave lenses, perfect for gathering even the faintest light, possibly used to hunt bioluminescent invertebrates.

I’ve known about these since drawings of them when I was little but I never saw such clear photos of a living one before.
