It’s Not a Plot Hole, It’s Foreshadowing

vs.

It’s Not a Plot Hole, It’s Just Something That They Opted Not to Spoon-feed You Because It Would Be Obvious If You Thought About It For 20 Seconds

vs.

It May Be a Plot Hole, But It Still Works In Terms of the Story’s Themes and Character Logic

vs.

Okay, It Is a Plot Hole, What Are You Going to Do, Cry about It?

vs.

All Works of Fiction Represent Constructed Realities and by Demanding a Lack of Plot Holes, You Are Improperly Importing the Rules of Objective Reality into a Subjective Creation that Must Be Judged Primarily on Its Aesthetic Merits

vs.

Dude, Just Come-up With a Headcanon Like A Normal Human Being

vs.

Is It Really a Plot Hole, or Are the Characters Just Not Making the Choices You Want Them To?

There is a crack in everything, that’s how the fanfic gets in

(Smiling at that last one)

Leave a little space

for the previously unthinkable

to save you.

i don’t want characters with healthy coping mechanisms, actually. i want them to yearn and weep and suffer and have their brutal worldviews informed and/ or altered exclusively by their unyielding love for like. one other person. sorry

If you care about creatives and artists at all, do not allow AI to take away their jobs.

Don't support AI art. Don't support AI writing. Don't support music made with AI. Don't support movies using AI. Don't support any AI that tries to replace real life people putting their heart and soul into their work and art.

Something like this would be so colossally helpful. I'm sick and tired of trying to research specific clothing from any given culture and being met with either racist stereotypical costumes worn by yt people or ai generated garbage nonsense, and trying to be hyper specific with searches yields fuck all. Like I generally just cannot trust the legitimacy of most search results at this point. It's extremely frustrating. If there are good resources for this then they're buried deep under all the other bullshit, and idk where to start looking.

>:)c

May I present to you, nationalclothing.org?

It doesn't have everything, but it's still my first source when researching traditional clothing from other cultures.

There's also this resource on historical fashion: Claire’s Historical Fashion Reference & Resources

another addition as far as physical media goes there is the encyclopedia of national dress (that i still need to buy myself bc this kind of thing is super important to my sort of fantasy designing) but yes i do agree i wish there was EVEN MORE documentation on this

It is soooo important that weird obsessive little girls grow up and become poets and authors

If I do not read 1000 works a day that include feelings only unlocked via intense alienation and forced introspection I will die

Small fantasy worldbuilding elements you might want to think about:

  • A currency that isn’t gold-standard/having gold be as valuable as tin
  • A currency that runs entirely on a perishable resource, like cocoa beans
  • A clock that isn’t 24-hours
  • More or less than four seasons/seasons other than the ones we know
  • Fantastical weather patterns like irregular cloud formations, iridescent rain
  • Multiple moons/no moon
  • Planetary rings
  • A northern lights effect, but near the equator
  • Roads that aren’t brown or grey/black, like San Juan’s blue bricks
  • Jewelry beyond precious gems and metals
  • Marriage signifiers other than wedding bands
  • The husband taking the wife's name / newlyweds inventing a new surname upon marriage
  • No concept of virginity or bastardry
  • More than 2 genders/no concept of gender
  • Monotheism, but not creationism
  • Gods that don’t look like people
  • Domesticated pets that aren’t re-skinned dogs and cats
  • Some normalized supernatural element that has nothing to do with the plot
  • Magical communication that isn’t Fantasy Zoom
  • “Books” that aren’t bound or scrolls
  • A nonverbal means of communicating, like sign language
  • A race of people who are obligate carnivores/ vegetarians/ vegans/ pescatarians (not religious, biological imperative)

I’ve done about half of these myself in one WIP or another and a little detail here or there goes a long way in reminding the audience that this isn’t Kansas anymore.

Beep boop! I look for accidental haiku posts. Sometimes I mess up.

You really need to make non-tragic past for your characters, significant people and events that impacted their lives, non-dramatic mundane moments that shaped them, happy memories, bitter memories, embarrassing memories.

Like yes the space princess lost her whole civilization, but did she have friends before that? Favorite place? Does she miss the sound of her favorite music she use to listen to?

You need to show us the flowers for us to be sad when you write that they ripped the garden out

you think writing is mostly making up rich worlds and complex characters and devising their interactions, but really it's mostly double-checking the meanings of incredibly basic words just in case you have been using them wrong your entire life. and that's ok
