So we’re reading macbeth in class and the final paper for it is to find a movie or play adaptation and write about how their interpretation helps or harms the text and changes the original meaning. Me and a friend end up talking about fanfiction while hanging out after class because it’s kind of like what the prompt for the essay is. My teacher overheard us say ‘ao3’ and asked ‘would i get in trouble for searching this up on school wifi?’ And me and my friend just stared at each other for a second and said ‘…no??’ And istg his facial expression changed in crazy ways that i’ve never seen before over the next two minutes. And so we ask him what he found and he turns his computer around to show us a macbeth x telletubies fanfiction.

obvs overall, m/m dominates and f/f and other are low

anecdotally, I expected f/f to have a higher no comments ratio. not really true! "other" is by far the most likely to get no comments.

other and gen are most likely to get very low hit counts.

providing some credence to the "f/f is unpopular because TV has less female characters" argument, in original works, m/m is half as common and f/f is ~50% more common. other almost triples. 7.2% of "other" fics are original works (compare to 1.2% for m/m), which likely contributes to "other" fics getting less attention.

(also from experience, a LOT of different stuff goes in the "other" category, which makes it less helpful to sort by)

however, lending credence to the "it's just misogyny" argument, f/f is still way underrepresented in original works.

I'd love to see overall average comparisons for hits and kudos across categories. might also be interesting to see how this compares across ratings - a lot of straight male fetish writers are migrating to AO3 right now, and that subculture tends to have a lot more f/f
