Chapter 2 of the murder fic is up on AO3! Content Warnings for this chapter - brief hospital setting, graphic descriptions of murder, blood. Word count for chapter 2 is 6.2K. See this post for full details including tag list for the fic.

Chapter Summary:

Steve and Robin make plans to protect Eddie.

Snippet below.

Neither Steve nor Robin managed to sleep at all that night. They stayed at the hospital, even though Wayne kept encouraging them to go home. He promised to call them if he got any updates, but they weren't willing to leave.

Steve's stomach fell when he saw a doctor hurrying toward them a little after seven the following morning. He couldn't get a read of the situation from the doctor's facial expression.

"Eddie's stabilized," the doctor announced once they got into a consult room. "We'll need to keep him on the ventilator for the time being to give his body some time to recover, but we should be able to wean him off in a week or so."

Wayne sighed, his relief palpable in the room around them. Robin put her head between her knees and muttered, "Thank god." Steve felt like he was going to cry.

"Can we see him?" Steve asked.

The doctor glanced at him. "Only family allowed in the ICU."

"They're family," Wayne announced. "His brother and sister. I'm their uncle."

Steve wanted to hug the man. The doctor gave them all a skeptical look, but didn't fight it. He sighed and said, "A nurse will come get you when you can come back to see him. He's sedated, so you won't be able to talk to him, but you can see him."

"Thanks, Wayne," Steve said after the doctor left them.

Wayne shrugged. "Ya basically are family at this point. No reason you shouldn't be allowed to see him."

Eddie walked on stage with his best friends to the sound of cheers. He accepted the award and stepped up to the microphone, smiling brightly. This was everything they had been working toward for so long. If you had asked them way back when, playing covers in Gareth’s garage, they never would've believed they'd actually make it to this moment. But the universe has been good to them the last few years. They've made a name for themselves. They've built something amazing, with people they love.

Eddie never would have believed this would really be his life.

Take It At Face Value

April Prompt: Score | Word Count: 351 | Rating: M | CW: Drug Addiction | Tags: Famous Corroded Coffin, Drug Addiction, Needing the Next Fix, Established Relationship, Road Manager Steve Harrington, Eddie's in Over His Head, But Steve's a Pretty Good Life Preserver

This is stupid. Eddie's aware it's stupid, but he's desperate. They had to fly, their stash got ditched, and now he's in a world of hurt.

Gareth and him both are, and that trumps the only score from known dealers rule. Gareth's supposed to be keeping Steve busy, entertained, annoyed — whatever — while Eddie's standing down a damp alley, downtown, hoping like hell he's not recognized. The press would love that.

He pays the iffy hook-up, and shoves the baggie into his leather jacket, hiding it. He doesn't need another arrest.

its just embarrassing when you make a fandom related post and it doesnt get any notes like okay. so no one want to play tuoys with me. no one wants to play with our little guys together. okay thats fine. yeah its cool... puts my hands in my jacket pockets. kicks a beer can that was on the side of the road a little

3 Ways to Make Your Dialogue More Interesting

Conflict, conflict, conflict!

(This post is a follow-up to my earlier post How to Improve Your Dialogue, which gave the first of the three tips listed here. This post goes deeper into the topic and gives two more tips about adding conflict to your dialogue.)

One of the biggest problems I see in fiction writers’ dialogue is a lack of conflict.

(Come to think of it, one of the biggest problems I see in general is a lack of conflict, but that’s another blog post.)

Good dialogue, like a good story, should be rich with conflict. There are exceptions – most notably in a story’s ending or in brief, interspersed moments when you want to slow down the pace. But as a general guideline, dialogue without conflict gets boring very quickly. Here’s a classic example:

“Hi,” Lisa said. “Hey,” José said. “How are you?” “Fine. You?” “Doing all right.” Lisa handed José a turkey sandwich. “Would you like a sandwich? I made two.” “Sure, thanks.”

Okay, that’s enough. I won’t continue to torture you. Not only is there no conflict between the two characters who are speaking, but there’s no conflict anywhere to be seen.

The bad news is that if you write something like this you will bore your reader to tears.

The good news is that there are lots of ways to add conflict to dialogue and once you know how to do it you can make just about any scene pop with tension.

These kinds of things give me hope

“I have very little knowledge of gay people and things like that there, so when I came here, my eyes were opened,” he told the state Assembly’s Health, Aging and Long-Term Care Committee just after 9 p.m. “I was one of the critics that sat on the side and made the decision there was only two genders, so I got an education that was unbelievable. And I don’t know just exactly how to say this, but my perspective for people has changed. … I’d like to apologize for being here, and I learned a very lot about this group of people.”

After he spoke, several attendees applauded.

The roses are beautiful at this time of the year. The bushes bloom, lush pinks and peaches and reds, even some yellow ones. Eddie loves them.

He’s lived out here, way out on the outskirts of Hawkins, for nearly twenty years, in the old house he bought with Wayne, God rest his soul. He’s still the town freak, does his best not to go into Hawkins proper if he can possibly avoid it, always willing to drive to other towns to get his groceries and gardening supplies as much as he can. Other than that, and the occasional trip to his dealer in Indy, there’s not much else he needs in life.

Strangers wander through his garden sometimes, knocking the bright, plump petals off the stems, hoping for a look at him, sometimes even trying to snap a photograph. They’re young, for the most part, and he remembers what it was like to be their age. There had been an old geezer that had lived on the other side of the woods, and he and Gareth, Jeff and Matty would hike out there sometimes to get high and throw rocks at his windows. The rumours about him were nasty so they had no qualms about doing it. Eddie supposes this is karma come to bite him in the ass.

This one is a little older than usual, not a high school student by the look of him, but it’s hard to tell, kids are getting younger looking these days. He’s shifty, has a bag swinging from his wrist, and he can imagine what’s in it. A camera hanging from the other one.

“If that’s a bag of shit, can you throw it on the roses? I’m out of manure.”

Summary:

Eddie can't afford to move to Hawkins, but he wants to live a little when he can, while he can. Have some fun and move on. That was the deal he made himself before he decided to visit. Falling for Steve Harrington is, therefore, pretty damn inconvenient.

he keeps on loving me (and i keep on wondering why)

Prompt: Proposal | Word Count: 3503 | Rating: T | CW: Language | Tags: AU, Established Steddie, Rural Living, Corroded Coffin Guys, Good Uncle Wayne Munson, Living Life Isn't Always Easy, But Loving Each Other Is

The sun is hot, blisteringly so, and Eddie steps on the edge of the shovel again. Pushing down hard. Digging into the old red dirt that's hidden away under the sod. Twisting, taking another chunk out, before tossing it aside. He'd just gotten the grass looking green instead of brown, at the cost of effort and time, both of which are always in short supply. Now there's gonna be an eyesore of a trench cutting across the yard.

Figures.

Get one step ahead, only to get knocked three steps back. It's all Eddie's ever known.

There's definitely a stoppage, and the rural sewer district insists it's on their side, not the county's, which makes it Eddie's responsibility to fix.

Wayne borrowed a hand crank snake from a friend at work, and they never even met resistance as they worked it down through the drain, as far as it'd go. The cleanout still running water out indicated the clog wasn't in the house, but somewhere else in the line, so they rented a hundred foot snake to run down the cleanout.

Sure that'd get it.

Still nothing.
