"CHRISSY!" he yelled over and over again. He pulled at his hair, so hard that clumps came out in his hands.

Hopper shifted awkwardly on the porch, looking over his shoulder. Several neighbors were poking their heads out of window and doors to watch the scene. Hopper squatted down in front of Pete and put a hand on his shoulder.

"Pete, maybe we should take this inside. Where's Clarissa?" Hopper looked over Pete's shoulder, expecting Pete's wife to have responded to the commotion, but she was nowhere to be seen.

He sat up. He couldn't see the water around him through the fog. He heard more splashing, like something large was breaching the water near him. The boat shook, pushed by something from below the water.

An object slid into view near Izzy's leg - a giant tentacle. It looked like the tentacles he'd seen on octopus, but at least 20 times larger than any he'd come across. Several other tentacles quickly joined the first, wrapping around the boat in a firm grip.

"Fuck," Izzy said as the tentacles all pulsed, crushing his rowboat to pieces.

As he was building himself a little bed in the boat out of rope and a sack, he heard something in the water. A loud splash, followed by a blast of noise. It was muffled, like it was coming from underwater, but still loud. Like it was being made by something quite large. It reminded him of whale vocalizations, but more frantic, sharper.

Just when he thought things couldn't possibly get any worse, a thick fog began to build over the water. So thick he could barely even see the boat beneath him. He stopped rowing. He couldn't see the stars anymore to navigate. There was no use continuing until the fog cleared.

Okay, finally gonna get started on this fic, thanks for the ask to get me going!

He couldn't believe Ed had let that happen. Had let Stede cheat his way into winning a duel using a loophole, and then had let Izzy leave. Thinking about it started an ache in Izzy's chest that had nothing to do with rowing.

His stomach rumbled, and he wished for a moment that he'd grabbed Roach's fucking projectile of a sandwich out of the water on his way out. It was getting dark, and he still hadn't reached the Republic of Pirates. This was shaping up to be a very long night.
