Not since the Deltas revved up the Deathmobile has a parade seen a float this dark.
Netflix on Thursday debuted a Wednesday-themed float as part of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade; see a first photo below, ahead of the float hitting the streets.
The creepy, kooky and all together ooky tableau featured a giant Wednesday Addams (played on the series by Jenna Ortega, but here by, I guess, a lot of paper maché) with Thing at her side, offering her brother Pugsley’s head on a platter, as part of a Thanksgiving smorgasbord.
During the actual parade, an army of Wednesdays lookalikes will be scattered around the float, while a performance of “Paint it Black” (by the indie-pop chart topper, Bishop Briggs) helps set the pitch-black mood.
The Wednesday character’s big-screen history, of course, has shown that she has little appetite for Thanksgiving (as seen below). And in Season 1 of the Netflix series, she works at the Pilgrim World tourist attraction but does not conceal her feelings about the holiday and its origins.
Netflix’s Wednesday — which dropped Season 1 more than two years ago — is a sleuthing, supernaturally infused mystery that chart’s the titular goth’s years as a student at Nevermore Academy, where she attempts to master her emerging psychic ability, thwart a monstrous killing spree that has terrorized the local town, and solve the murder mystery that embroiled her parents 25 years ago. All while navigating her new and very tangled relationships at Nevermore.
Season 2 of Wednesday is set to premiere on Netflix sometime in 2025, though minus two cast members. Percy Hynes White (who played Xavier Thorpe) and Naomi J. Ogawa (who played Yoko Tanaka), both series regulars in Season 1, will not return for Season 2. (Ortega has already revealed that Season 2 is ditching the love triangle between Hynes White’s Xavier and Hunter Doohan’s Tyler Galpin in order to “lean into the horror aspect of the show a little bit more.”)
On the plus side, recording artist Lady Gaga reportedly will appear in Season 2, and is said to be filming her scenes now in Europe.
In a video released in September for Netflix’s Geeked Week, Catherine Zeta-Jones — who plays Wednesday’s mother Morticia — promised that “Season 2 is going to be bigger and more twisted than you can ever imagine.” And don’t feel bad that you only get to see bits and pieces: “If we showed you any more, your eyes would bleed,” series star/producer Jenna Ortega warns in a perfect Wednesday deadpan. “And I’m not that generous.”
