"She held out for a better job" means she waited for something better.

is a way to tell someone to wait or putting something on pause. It's like the action of telling someone to hold something (object), then tell them to release that said object which then continues its way of course. (When holding an apple, it stays in your hand. The moment you release it, it falls.)

Stay is more of a physical command.

It's basically "to be" somewhere.

For a better way to remember, just think "Hold = pause" / "Stay = to be somewhere or on something"

You can say “hold the money up to me.” This puts both prepositions away from the verb. Since this is no longer a verb phrase. The two can go together.

Hold out means leaving them for someone else to grab. I held out my hand for him to shake.

Holding the keys in a phrase can be interpreted as in charge. (I.e. the person with the keys is usually the person in charge of that thing)
