it's another word for "buy"

"I'm going to buy this book."
"I'm going to purchase this book."

the meaning is exactly the same. Personally, I think purchase sounds a bit more formal than buy, but there's nothing unnatural about using one over the other.

present: purchase 買う/買います
continuous: purchasing 買っています
past: purchased 買いました

A: Purchase and buy could mean the same thing or different things depending on the context. For instance, if someone would like to buy something they could also say they would like to purchase something. On the other hand, if you are a store clerk and you’re speaking to an employee, if you say “would you like to complete this purchase” it wouldn’t be the same as saying “would you like to complete this buying (buy)”

A: @Mirai55 All of those are valid ways to abbreviate Purchase Order in my opinion. “P/O” and “P.O.” would be more standard but “PO” could show up especially in more casual writing.

Personally I would use P.O. though and that is probably what the majority would usually do.

The slash “/“ functions the same way as the “.” in this case. It is less common to use, though you see it in abbreviations like “w/o” “w/“ “n/a” so it is by no means rare.

The only difference is you would only use “/“ in the middle - never at the end. So “purchase order” could be “P/O” or “P.O.” but “December” would only be written as “Dec.” and not “Dec/“

And yes for a plural of either one, you would add a lowercase “s”
