It is commonly used to mean family - relations can be mothers, fathers, aunts and uncles etc

But it can mean anything that concerns another thing - eg ‘the information related to your criminal case’, ‘this news is related to your application’

• The discussion was relevant to climate control = the discussion was significantly related to climate control/ the discussion closely focused on climate control

Here, the second sentence emphasises both the closeness of the link between the discussion and climate control, as well as the significance of that link.

Basically, you can think of it as 'related' = 'something which is involved with [something]' and 'relevant' as 'something which is closely involved with and important/significant to [something]'.

Some more examples:

• I don't think religion is relevant these days
• Drug use and crime are closely related
• Candidates with relevant experience in child care will be considered
• I'm distantly related to him
• How relevant an issue is immigration to you?

i.e donkey and horse are in the same family, they are kind of related.

A: They're about the same. I'd say in most situations they're interchangeable.

Though, In the first sentence, relating to suggests that the law is about patents (such that you would relate them).

The second sentence just says that the law is somehow connected to patents, but may be about something else. (Maybe it's copyright law or something)
