Francisco (Curro) Machuca Prieto
His PhD (UMA, 2017) was on the construction of Phoenician identity in the roman Ulterior-Baetica province, examining various aspects (rituals, cults, numismatics, epigraphy, literary traditions, culture material and Greco-Latin texts). The purpose of this research has been to reach a better understanding of the social and cultural impact that the Roman rule had in the ancient Phoenician communities of the Iberian Peninsula, like Gadir-Gades, Malaka or Sexs, and how those communities, specially their elites, reajusted their social standing by adapting their identities within the new political framework imposed by Rome.
As an ancient historian, Francisco Machuca Prieto mostly deals with the II Iron Age, Hellenistic, Roman Republican and Early Roman Empire periods. The geographical scope of his research is the Western Mediterranean, more specifically the SW of the Iberian Peninsula.
He is specialised in the Phoenician diaspora in the ancient Western Mediterranean, with research interests in identity, ethnic and cultural matters, power relationships and social change. Moreover, Francisco Machuca Prieto is very interested on Postcolonial Studies, Global History and Modern Historiography about the Ancient World.
He has also centred his attention on the connections between Archaeology and ideologies such as nationalism and colonialism, and deals with other issues such as class, gender and archaeological tourism.
Address: Dpto. de Ciencias Históricas. Facultad de Filosofía y Letras. Universidad de Málaga. Campus de Teatinos s/n. 29071 - Málaga (España).
