This article introduces the special issue “Connecting Virtues,” which aims to advance virtue theo... more This article introduces the special issue “Connecting Virtues,” which aims to advance virtue theory by bringing into a conversation works on the virtues in epistemology, ethics, and political philosophy. The collection covers several key themes within virtue theory. It includes ground‐breaking articles offering original solutions to long‐standing issues in virtue theory, such as the plausibility of different lists of virtues, the relationship between virtues and their opposing vices and the connection between moral and intellectual virtues. In addition, the collection offers insights into cutting‐edge fields of application of the topic of virtue, such as the role of intellectual virtues in an age of neuromedia, virtuous dispositions related to social epistemology, and the role of some neglected virtues for political philosophy.

In this chapter, the authors offer a sketch of the state of the art as concerns existing accounts... more In this chapter, the authors offer a sketch of the state of the art as concerns existing accounts of virtue acquisition in relation to automaticity. In particular, the chapter focuses on the so-called “skill model,” which the authors aim to improve by questioning its rather common underlying dualistic picture of the mind. Then, the authors propose an account of skillful emotions by identifying the features that make them both automatic and embedded in an intelligent practice. Finally, the authors show how this view can help the skill model by offering a better description of emotion shaping in virtue acquisition. By doing so, they contend that emotions contribute autonomously and actively to the skillfulness of the habits in which they are embedded.

This paper investigates civility from an Aristotelian perspective and has two objectives. The fir... more This paper investigates civility from an Aristotelian perspective and has two objectives. The first is to offer a novel account of this virtue based on Aristotle’s remarks about civic friendship. The proposed account distinguishes two main components of civility—civic benevolence and civil deliberation—and shows how Aristotle’s insights can speak to the needs of our communities today. The notion of civil deliberation is then unpacked into three main dimensions: motivational, inquiry-related, and ethical. The second objective is to illustrate how the post-truth condition—in particular, the spread of misinformation typical of the digital environments we inhabit—obstructs our capacity to cultivate the virtue of civility by impairing every component of civil deliberation. The paper’s overall ambition is to direct virtue theorists’ attention to the need to foster civic virtues as a means of counteracting the negative aspects of the post-truth age. The most recent wave of virtue-theoretic research has brought attention to a range of new—or, at least, underexplored—issues about human character. To name just a few, a lot has been said about putting theoretical conceptions of character on psychologically robust foundations, investigating moral and epistemic vices, and the specific role that virtues such as humility, trust, honesty, and courage can play today. Nonetheless, it is only in the past few years that virtue theorists have started to reconsider the importance of civic aspects of our character. This is a timely concern—one that relates to deeply problematic aspects of our conduct qua members of our communities—in a couple respects. Several recent political events reveal nationalistic and antidemocratic turns in various countries. And for the tenth year in a row, citizens of the digital world have experienced a deterioration of their rights, most recently accelerated by the † Università di Genova, Italy. In this paper, I examine the role played by the emotion of admiration in formulating moral judgme... more In this paper, I examine the role played by the emotion of admiration in formulating moral judgments. First, I discuss whether and when admiration is a reliable source of moral knowledge, or, on the contrary, it misleads the subject, leaving her prey to forms of uncritical devotion to unworthy objects of admiration. To do so, I try to elucidate which underlying theory of emotions best allows one to characterize admiration as a reliable source of moral knowledge. Second, I introduce the notion of transformative moral experience, understood as a subclass of transformative experiences (cf. Paul 2014), and I argue that it is precisely admiration that ensures the rationality of the choices made in such experiences. Finally, in light of this analysis, I show how admiration-together with the constellation of positive and negative emotions connected to the perception of moral exemplarity-acts as a central element for the maintenance of moral integrity. I defend, in particular, the idea that integrity should not be understood as mere coherence, nor as a static maintenance of the moral status quo, but as being firmly rooted in one's own identity yet open to novelty and especially to the novelty represented by transformative moral experiences.

In this paper, I argue for an Aristotelian way of accommodating supererogation within virtue ethi... more In this paper, I argue for an Aristotelian way of accommodating supererogation within virtue ethics by retrieving an account of moral heroism and providing a picture of different degrees of virtue. This, I claim, is the most appropriate virtue-ethical background allowing us to talk about supererogation without falling prey to several dangers. After summarizing the main attempts to deny the compatibility of virtue and supererogation, I will present some recent proposals to accommodate supererogation within virtue ethics. Next, I will argue that these proposals raise substantial worries. I will then offer an analysis of heroism and the degrees of virtue to outline my own alternative definition of supererogation in terms of heroic virtue.

This paper focuses on negative exemplarity-related emotions (NEREs) and on their educational impl... more This paper focuses on negative exemplarity-related emotions (NEREs) and on their educational implications. In this paper, we will first argue for the nonexpendability of negative emotions broadly conceived (section 2) by defending their instrumental and intrinsic role in a good and flourishing life. In section 3, we will make the claim more specific by focusing on the narrower domain of NEREs and argue for their moral and educational significance by evaluating whether they fit the arguments provided in the previous section. In section 4, we will propose three educational strategies to foster NEREs’ positive moral role. In conclusion, we will point out that an exemplarist approach to character education would greatly benefit from a more fine-grained account of the emotions involved in the educational process and from a broader perspective on which of these emotions should be taken as valuable for educational purposes.

Esso non pretende di esaurire i percorsi e le suggestioni che una tematica così vasta presenta, né di coprirne tutta la storia; piuttosto, vuole essere uno stimolo per la ricerca, ponendo in connessione tagli disciplinari e metodologici differenti per offrire una riflessione a tutto campo, che metta in dialogo studiosi provenienti da ambiti diversi ed apra nuove prospettive d’indagine.
Come sostiene anche Suárez del resto, le parti che siglano il patto fondativo, ovvero i singoli tra di loro, da un lato, e la comunità nel suo complesso con il sovrano, dall’altro lato, sono parti politiche prima ancora che giuridiche, eppure i due elementi (politico e giuridico) confluiscono contemporaneamente, come in una commistione, e si fondono fino a non comprendere dove inizi l’uno e dove termini l’altro.
