O teorema de Bernoulli (deduzido da equação de trabalho-energia de Euler) é um princípio básico d... more O teorema de Bernoulli (deduzido da equação de trabalho-energia de Euler) é um princípio básico da mecânica dos fluidos, usado na resolução de problemas práticos ao longo de um fluxo. Com esta experiência laboratorial pretendemos analisar o comportamento de um fluido (água) ao se movimentar por uma conduta (troço de conduta) com variações de diâmetro (tubo de Venturi). Através das leituras dos manómetros (alturas piezométricas) obtemos a pressão, os caudais e os tempos de escoamento, determinando a relação existente entre a pressão estática e as diversas secções do tubo de Venturi, e comparamos os resultados obtidos experimentalmente com os esperados teoricamente. A análise dos dados experimentais foi realizada utilizando principalmente o programa Microsoft Excel. Concluímos que as alturas piezométricas variam com a pressão estática, e a altura cinética com a variação de velocidade.

Madeira, like many mountainous volcanic islands, is susceptible to flash floods. Throughout its h... more Madeira, like many mountainous volcanic islands, is susceptible to flash floods. Throughout its history, about 40 large events resulted in more than 1200 victims and countless damages. Recently, urban areas expanded greatly, leading to a higher exposure of the population to flash floods. In order to analyse ways to reduce vulnerability and decrease hazard in the urbanised, flash flood prone watershed of the Machico River, the construction of detention basins (DB) is simulated. A hydrological and hydraulic model was performed to determine if they would be a viable option to protect downstream populations. Modelling suggests that two 12 m high outlet structures, and a storage capacity of 111 298 m 3 (DB1) and 121 095 m 3 (DB2), would reduce peak discharge by 72%, from a precipitation event with a return period of 100 years. Two identified sensitive Sections (S) had their fill rates reduced from 130.6% to 79.6% (S1) and from 128.6% to 33.4% (S2), thus preventing channel overflow. A concise economic analysis was made in terms of implementation and maintenance costs, as well as a SWOT analysis highlighting that DB should be regarded as a viable engineering solution to reduce vulnerability to flash floods hazards in volcanic islands with small, steep, and urbanised watersheds. Flash floods are more prone to occur in mountainous regions, where steep slopes provide more gravitational energy to the water flow, rendering them more destructive (Bryant, 2005). Casos extremos como os que ocorreram em 2010 e 2013 na Ilha da Madeira corroboram com este indicativo, sendo as regiões mais afetadas as que possuíam maior índice urbanístico e maior impermeabilização do solo, como o concelho de Machico. Portanto, com base no histórico recente de cheias no concelho de Machico e o auxílio de ferramentas de georreferenciação como o ArcGIS, proceder-se-á a análise geomorfológica e hidrológica da bacia hidrográfica da ribeira de Machico, de forma a verificar o caudal expectável para um período de recorrência de 100 anos, de acordo com a Distribuição Probabilística de Gumbel. Nowadays, the world is facing many important problems, including terrorism, drinkingwater supply ... more Nowadays, the world is facing many important problems, including terrorism, drinkingwater supply problems, and environmental pollution, which have strong impacts on the sustainable development. In this paper, the cointegration between drinking water, terrorism, economic growth, energy consumption, and environmental pollution was explored in Afghanistan, Burkina Faso, Iraq, Arab Republic of Egypt, Cameroon, Mali, Mozambique, Niger, Nigeria, Somalia, Syrian Arab Republic, and Pakistan in the period of 2000–2020 by using the panel Fourier bootstrapping auto regressive distributed lag (PFBARDL) test, and then the direction of causality between the selected variables was determined. The PFBARDL test determined evidence of cointegration among the selected variables. The causality test found evidence of unidirectional causality from terrorism to drinking water and environmental pollution.

This paper aims to test the structure of interest rates during the period from 1 September 1981 t... more This paper aims to test the structure of interest rates during the period from 1 September 1981 to 28 December 2020 by using Lie algebras and groups. The selected period experienced substantial events impacting interest rates, such as the economic crisis, the military intervention of the USA in Iraq, and the COVID-19 pandemic, in which economies were in lockdown. These conditions caused the interest rate to have a nonlinear structure, chaotic behavior, and outliers. Under these conditions, an alternative method is proposed to test the random and nonlinear structure of interest rates to be evolved by a stochastic differential equation captured on a curved state space based on Lie algebras and group. Then, parameter estimates of this equation were obtained by OLS, NLS, and GMM estimators (hereafter, LieNLS, LieOLS, and LieGMM, respectively). Therefore, the interest rates that possess nonlinear structures and/or chaotic behaviors or outliers were tested with LieNLS, LieOLS, and LieGMM....
