I obtained the degrees BComm (Law) cum laude (1992), LLB cum laude (1995), LLM cum laude (1996) and LLD (2008) from the University of Pretoria.
While completing the LLB degree I was employed as a tutor for the modules Introduction to Law 110 and 120 in the Faculty of Law, University of Pretoria from February 1994 to November 1996 and as a part-time junior lecturer (for the module Indigenous Law) from February to November 1996 while I was completing the LLM degree. I became a candidate attorney at Deneys Reitz Inc (now known as Norton Rose Fulbright) in January 1997 and after my articles of clerkship I was offered a position as professional assistant, which I accepted and held until May 1999. I joined the Department of Legal History, Comparative Law and Legal Philosophy (now known as the department of Jurisprudence) as senior lecturer on 1 June 1999. I was promoted to associate professor and appointed as deputy dean from 1 January 2010. I was appointed as acting dean from 1 January to 31 October 2011. I was appointed as deputy dean for a second term in 2014 and held this position until the end of June 2018.
I contribute to teaching and research in the field of legal skills, human rights and anti-discrimination law. I have co-authored two student textbooks. I am the author or co-author of more than 25 publications in accredited peer-reviewed journals, two chapters in two nationally published books, a chapter in an internationally published book, 16 non-accredited academic publications and two short stories.
I am a non-practising admitted attorney of the High Court of South Africa and serves as the Local Director: Legal Education on behalf of the Law Society of South Africa.
I served as the chairperson of the LLB Committee from 2005 to 2006 and again from 2008 until June 2018. I was appointed as the programme coordinator for the LLB degree with effect from May 2008 and held this position until December 2009. (With my appointment as deputy dean this position was not filled again.)
As law student I received awards for best performance in a number of modules, as well as the Certificate from the Vice Chancellor and Principal for best pregraduate achievement in the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences in 1992. As lecturer I received awards for the best publication by a junior researcher in the Faculty of Law, University of Pretoria in 2001 and 2002.
I obtained funding for a three-year cycle (2009-2011) from the University of Pretoria’s Research Development Programme to undertake a study visit to Maastricht University, The Netherlands (comparative law research on the Dutch approach to combating discrimination) and to undertake empirical research on South Africa’s equality courts. The empirical research is still continuing with NRF incentive funding.
I have successfully supervised and is currently supervising a number of LLM (mini-dissertation) and LLD students.
I hold a C2 rating from the National Research Foundation.
