prose. There are similarities in plot, setting, and characters and also
dissimilarities in the purpose of writing. History aims to inform or educate
whereas fiction aims to entertain. In The Evolution of the English Novel, Stoddard states that fiction is the underlying basis of the novel, whereas
fact is an underlying basis of history (89). New historicism provides
equal weightage to the literary text and the non-literary text. This paper
presents a parallel study of Indian chozha history with the
fiction Ponniyin Selvan written by Kalki. This paper aims to
present how Kalki Krishnamurthy appropriates the strategy of New
Historicism to revise the history of the chozha kingdom. It focuses on that particular period's
cultural, political and social context. In the
framework of New Historicism, the researcher tries to fix Kalki's Ponniyin
Selvan to delineate how it blurs the distinction between history and
literature
