Security in the context of a sovereign state is difficult to define. It can mean absence of insecurities, or, living permanently in a dangerously state of affairs, like the leaders of Israel seem to have conceived for them. Waging war against the Taliban in Afghanistan was to eliminate elements of insecurity for the U.S. and getting rid of the Taliban, appeared to have been determined by Bush Administration as a crucial factor for the U.S. national security. The result, however, has yet to confirm whether such a security paradigm is justified.

The end of the Cold War does not mean that there is no longer a balance of power at the global level. It’s just that it is no longer political ideology that dominates the world, but rather it is capitalist dogma. The entire world is concentrated on net profits, turnover, stock market results, and dividends. Citizens do not have enemies, they have competitors. The state is no longer the main player on the arena, it has retreated to companies who are more and more at the forefront. The whole world is becoming a huge web, all thanks to the Internet and globalization. The computer world now influences all spheres of human life, including the economy and the need to harvest and exploit intelligence faster than the competing country has become paramount.
Doing More and Expecting Less: The Future of US Alliances in the Asia Pacific. Issues and Insights , 2013
This chapter provides an overview of Australian perspectives on the US alliance in light of ongoing and emerging challenges in the Asia-Pacific region. After a brief discussion of the motivations behind the signing of the ANZUS treaty, the first part of the chapter examines the historical context of the alliance, with a particular focus on the long-standing and ongoing tussle in Australia between independence in foreign policy making vis-à-vis broader structural constraints. While this debate has been a constant feature of the political scene in Australia, it has come into particular focus since the US withdrawal from Vietnam, which marked a turning point in Australian perspectives with regard to its own role in Asia. The collision of ideas surrounding Australian identity and Australian national interest has been reflected in policy approaches as successive governments have sought to strike a balance between the two exigencies and thus, most optimally ensure Australia’s strategic future. The chapter concludes by examining current perspectives through the lens of an ongoing debate taking place in Australian academic circles about what the rise of China means for Australia and its commitment to the US alliance, and considers options for caucus-style cooperation with fellow US allies beyond the hub-and-spokes model.
With revolutionary changes in communications technology and the growing complexity of national security, Australia‟s intelligence community faces a relentless growth of the information it collects and analyses. This article explores the impact of this challenge on the foreign intelligence assessment process. In particular, three risks—the threat to information security, the pressure of coordinating assessment, and the potentially harmful influence of policymakers—are examined in detail. Among other changes, a proposed Foreign Intelligence Advisory Board, modelled on the US equivalent, but with distinctive powers suited to Australia, should help minimise problems likely to arise in the years ahead.
