Abstract

A blog article on the state of Indian cities that are always work in progress

“Under Construction” | The Urban Junction https://urbanjunctions.wordpress.com/2013/05/07/under-construc... The Urban Junction THE URBAN JUNCTION A MEETING PLACE FOR IDEAS ON INDIAN CITIES “Under Construction” May 7, 2013 A site common for most Indian Cities today- a half complete flyover, road widening, dug-out roads for cable work and diversion with the board saying “Under Construction”. The site of construction in public domain poses daily problems to commuters and neighborhoods as they go around their daily grind cursing the municipality, lamenting the corrupt contractors and blaming the poor engineers for the mess. It has almost become a daily Indian urban ritual to blame the authorities for the half open construction sites around but I guess at the same time there is a sense of optimism and hope that all this leads to “better cities”. That this is a temporary situation and it will eventually lead to a better world. This is a kind of dream that is circulated again and again to justify the same. It is not very different from the times we get satisfaction when we find our house being repaired or extended. We always think that the immediate pain of curating the labor and material in our private space leads to better future. Such optimism rests on hope. Hope for a better city. Hope for a more secure future. Somehow I feel it is this “hope” that makes all of us accept the “under construction” mess in our cities. We lament it, we criticize the people behind but I guess all of us in the bottom of our heart assume, that it might be for better, that it will improve things around. Does anyone know what finally improves; are we creating better spaces for kids and old people? Are we creating more footpaths for people to walk? Are we making our public place more accessible to all? or this “under construction” city is gearing up for welcoming more cars and vehicles at large? See around your own city. Ask questions and find out! Occasionally, some of your visitors may see an advertisement here.
