In order to designate his method, Empedocles uses in fragment 35, the Homeric form κατέλεξα, the meaning of which should not be translated as a synonym of “to say” but by “to enounce in a catalog". It is now well known that in the Strasbourg papyrus we find three lines similar to three lines of fragment 35 which, according to the Panzerbieter hypothesis renewed by Martin and Primavesi, would constitute a citation. But it has not been noticed that it is a catalog of the Homeric type which appears after the citation in the papyrus, whereas it is a narrative (muthos) which follows it in fragment 35. This paper shows that on condition of giving the verb katelexai its Homeric meaning, and of relating it to an actual use of catalogs in Empedocles’cosmological hymn, the understanding of fragment 35 is considerabily improved.
