Three pockmarks named “Hydrate Hole”, “Black Hole”, and “Worm Hole” were studied in the northern Congo Fan area at water depths around 3100 m. The cross-disciplinary investigations include seafloor observations by TV-sled, sampling by TV-guided grab and multicorer as well as gravity coring, in addition to hydroacoustic mapping by a swath system, a parametric sediment echosounder and a deep-towed sidescan sonar. The pockmarks are morphologically complex features consisting of one or more up to 1000 m wide and 10–15 m deep depressions revealed by swath-mapping. High reflection amplitudes in the sediment echosounder records indicate the presence of a 25–30 m thick shallow sediment section with gas hydrates, which have been recovered by gravity corer. Hydrates, chemosynthetic communities, and authigenic carbonates clearly indicate fluid flow from depths, which we propose to be mainly in the form of ascending gas bubbles rather than advection of methane-rich porewater.Evidence for seepage at the seafloor is confined to small areas within the seafloor depressions and was revealed by characteristic backscatter facies. Small meter-scale sized depressions signified as “pits” exist in or close to the pockmarks but seafloor observations did not reveal evidence for the presence of typical seep organisms or authigenic carbonates. Areas of intermediate backscatter were inhabited by vesicomyid clams in soft sediments. High backscatter was associated with vestimentiferan tubeworms (Siboglinidae) and authigenic carbonates. We discuss the three different environments “pits”, “vesicomyid clams”, “vestimentifera/carbonate” in the light of differences in the geochemical setting. Pits are probably formed by escaping gas bubbles but seepage is too transient to sustain chemosynthetic life. Vesicomyid clams are present in sediments with gas hydrate deposits. However, the hydrates occur several meters below the surface indicating a lower flux compared to the vestimentifera/carbonate environment. In the latter environment, accumulated carbonates and clam shells indicate that fine grained particles have been eroded away. Gas hydrates were found in this environment at depths below about 50 cm suggesting the highest supply with methane compared to the other environments.

Digital seismic reflection (boomer) profiles of an active pockmark, in UK block 15/25, North Sea, reveal that the feature was formed prior to the deposition of the most recent sediments, probably by vigorous (or even catastrophic) gas escape. This release may have been triggered by the melting of ground ice when North Atlantic waters first entered the North Sea after the last glaciation, about 13,000 years ago. Possible sources of the gas are investigated by examining the composite log from a nearby petroleum exploration well; it is concluded that, although the gas may .originate from the Kimmeridge Clay, it probably comes from lignites of Tertiary age. Its migration towards the seabed is interrupted by local accumulations at several horizons, the shallowest of which (<80 m below seabed) is trapped beneath clayey sediments of the Coal Pit Formation. The topography of the base of this layer apparently controls the location of gas migration pathways to the seabed. As these lead to ...

Interest in language has not recently developed. It goes back centuries from now. The oldest grammar we know, the one written by Panini in 300 B.C., analyses the speech sounds of Sanskrit and its grammatical structure. The phenomenon of language has puzzled and attracted people's minds in many different ways. It may not be possible to explore all of them here. Interest in the numerous languages of the world has led to the scientific study of linguistic phenomena, particularly in their morphological aspects. This has given rise to two main types of classification - a structural type, based on the relative degree of synthesis of the words and how various parts of a word are attached to it, and a genetic type of classification. The genetic classification is based on comparative studies about phonetic and structural changes. Through a careful study of phonetic changes and changes in vocabulary, a theoretical reconstruction may be made of the original language from which the present existing languages have stemmed, or (since the interest in the origin of languages has faded) of the distribution of languages and dialects. These studies may also prove a valuable aid in studying the patterns of population changes. Such studies necessitate thorough investigation of the phonetic or sound elements and the phonemes or functionally significant units that make up a language pattern. Apart from this scientific use, the study of speech sounds has its practical application in the field of language teaching. The sociological emphasis is divulged on the language as it is a part of a social system. Language may be regarded not only as a tool but as social action calling forth counter-action. The psychologists have studied language from a different angle. Their contribution lies in the psychology of communication. Generally this field ranges from the mechanical aspects (phonetics, perception of speech) to the socio-psychological patterns of communication and barriers to communication, learning habits, and distortion of testimony or of rumor. For many the study of language means the only key to the world of literature. They struggle valiantly to master speech sounds, grammatical rules, idioms, and vocabulary, but their ultimate aim is to enjoy the literary efforts of others or to express themselves in that way. The various aspects of language are all interrelated. Therefore the special approaches should not be seen as separate fields of study, but rather as a specific emphasis.
