Literate Statistical Practice (LSP) is an method for statistical practice which suggests that documentation and specification occur at the same time as statistical coding. It applies literate programming Knuth (1992) to the practice of statistics. We discuss 2 different approaches for LSP, one currently implemented using Emacs with Noweb and Emacs Speaks Statistics (ESS), and the other developed based on eXtensible Markup Language (XML) tools. The interference needed to change an individual's habits comes at a high cost, and good tools are critical for encouraging people to switch to a more literate style. We discuss why LSP can help, and suggest how ESS can ease the burden placed on the analyst.

Examples of such electronic textbooks are the CD-ROM-based ActivStats, the Web-based CyberStats, and the CD-ROM- and Web-based MM*Stat, In the second part of this paper, we will present our experiences from teaching an undergraduate "Introductory Statistics" course at Utah State University, using CyberStats. We compare this Web-based course with similar textbook-based courses and report student and instructor viewpoints.

The community of statisticians and statistics educators should take responsibility for the evaluation and improvement of software quality from the perspective of education. The paper will develop a perspective, an ideal system of requirements to critically evaluate existing software and to produce future software more adequate both for learning and doing statistics in introductory courses. Different kinds of tools and microworlds are needed. After discussing general requirements for such programs, a prototypical ideal software system will be presented in detail. It will be illustrated how such a system could be used to construct learning environments and to support elementary data analysis with exploratory working style.
