PITTELLA, Carlos; FERRARI, Patricio, "The Poems of Frederick Wyatt " (2016). Pessoa Plural―A Journal of Fernando Pessoa Studies, No. 10, Fall, pp. 226-301. Brown Digital Repository. Brown University Library. https://doi.org/10.7301/Z00863H2 Is Part of: Pessoa Plural―A Journal of Fernando Pessoa Studies, Issue 10 The Poems of Frederick Wyatt [Os Poemas de Frederick Wyatt] https://doi.org/10.7301/Z00863H2 ABSTRACT If Fernando Pessoa's Portuguese works contain a coterie of heteronyms, his English poetry also displays an array of fictitious authors: besides Pessoa himself, one finds Charles Robert Anon, Alexander Search and--with his poems compiled here for the first time--Frederick Wyatt. After Alexander Search's presence, which dominated the English juvenilia of Pessoa, and before The Madd Fiddler, submitted for publication (but rejected) in 1917, Pessoa created Frederick Wyatt, noting that "of dreamers no one was a greater dreamer than he." Circa 1913, Pessoa introduced Wyatt in a preface and attributed to him 21 poems previously assigned to Alexander Search. Here we present the preliminary texts and poems of Frederick Wyatt, including new transcriptions and significant updates from previous editions. PITTELLA, Carlos, "Sonnet 101 with Prof. Pessoa: Fernando Pessoa's Marginalia on an Anthology of 19 th -Century English Sonnets" (2017). Pessoa Plural―A Journal of Fernando Pessoa Studies, No. 11, Spring, pp. 277-375. Brown Digital Repository. Brown University Library. https://doi.org/10.7301/Z089142K Is Part of: Pessoa Plural―A Journal of Fernando Pessoa Studies, Issue 11 Sonnet 101 with Prof. Pessoa: Fernando Pessoa’s Marginalia on an Anthology of 19th-Century English Sonnets [Aula de soneto com o Prof. Pessoa: a marginália de Fernando Pessoa numa antologia de sonetos ingleses do século XIX] https://doi.org/10.7301/Z089142K ABSTRACT A 1902 edition of Sonnets from this Century was located in the estate of the late Portuguese architect Fernando Távora. The anthology displays inscriptions on 194 of its pages, starting with the signature "F. A. N. Pessôa." This is not only a volume that once belonged to Fernando Pessoa, but a book no one even knew to exist, exhibiting a treasure of annotations. It offers insight into the deep relationship between the Portuguese poet and the English lyrical tradition. This dossier, preceded by an introduction, transcribes all the handwritten notes in the volume and presents facsimiled pages organized in thematic sections: general evaluations of sonnets according to Pessoa, Portuguese translations, notes on meter, rhyme and form, and other marginalia. This work aspires to serve as a model for editing annotations in any volume of Pessoa's private library, as well as to open paths of inquiry, for every poem annotated in Sonnets of this Century may contribute to a better understanding of Pessoa's works. RESUMO Uma edição de Sonnets from this Century (1902) foi encontrada no espólio do falecido arquiteto português Fernando Távora. A. N. Pessôa." The essays that follow derive from these two events. The first one was held at the Fernando Pessoa House in Lisbon on 3 July 2014 and the second on 17 and 18 April 2015 at Brown University. Major sponsorship for this event came from the Department of Portuguese and Brazilian Studies. «Among the many things they cover, the essays gathered in this important and highly original volume, sometimes individually but certainly cumulatively, make the case for taking seriously Fernando Pessoa’s large body of poetry written in English. Moreover, they suggest, if only by implication, that Pessoa deserves a place in the long and distinguished traditions of English poetry. Few if any have hitherto had the courage to make the claim for his inclusion in the illustrious group of English poets» [George Monteiro]. Pessoa acknowledged the occultist influence in the literature of his time, and in his own, and made an effort to explain his particular path, which followed, as he insisted, the mystic and not the symbolist tradition-poetry of thought and not poetry of imagination. Brown University Library. https://doi.org/10.7301/Z0Z899MQ Is Part of: Pessoa Plural―A Journal of Fernando Pessoa Studies, Issue 10 Fernando Pessoa’s The Mad Fiddler: Sensationism in English [The Mad Fiddler de Fernando Pessoa: Sensacionismo em Inglês] https://doi.org/10.7301/Z0Z899MQ ABSTRACT Emphasizing Pessoa's dual cultural heritage, this essay traces the poet's exposure to English literature and culture from a young age, notably through schooling and directed readings during his formative years. Particular attention is paid to the impact of romantic poets from the pantheist lineage of Shelley and Blake on Pessoa's emergent poetics and poetry, as well as to the hitherto little-known details of his reception of Blake's poetry mediated through Yeats. These facets of their works surface in the transcendental pantheism expressed in the poems collected in The Mad Fiddler, an unpublished collection of English poems written between 1910 and 1917. A laboratory of the maturing process in Pessoa's poetry, I contend that this collection rehearses analogous aesthetic and philosophical ideas in his poetry in English to those he was developing in Portuguese, namely Sensationism and the Portuguese Neopaganism with which the heteronyms were associated, arguing through close readings of illustrative poems. Brown University Library. https://doi.org/10.26300/7tq8-s225 Is Part of: Pessoa Plural―A Journal of Fernando Pessoa Studies, Issue 17 Problems in translating Pessoa’s poetry into English [Problemas ao traduzir a poesia de Pessoa para o Inglês] https://doi.org/10.26300/7tq8-s225 ABSTRACT This paper focuses on five problems all translators of Fernando Pessoa's poetry into English must grapple with. The first is whether or not to distinguish the poetry of Pessoa (orthonym), Álvaro de Campos, Alberto Caeiro and Ricardo Reis through the use of stylistic and lexical markers. The second is: to what degree should the translator imitate Pessoa's occasional labyrinthine constructions? Third, every translator must decide at the outset whether or not to use rhyme and meter, where these occur in Pessoa's poetry. The final two problems concern Portuguese grammar: how to translate the pretérito perfeito do indicativo [simple past tense], which lends itself in English to both simple past and present perfect tenses; and how to translate the personal infinitive, a form unique among all languages for handling a change in subject within a sentence. Brown University Library. https://doi.org/10.7301/Z0VD6WZJ Is Part of: Pessoa Plural―A Journal of Fernando Pessoa Studies, Issue 2 Genetic Criticism and the Relevance of Metrics in Editing Pessoa’s Poetry [Crítica genética e a relevância da métrica na edição da poesia pessoana] https://doi.org/10.7301/Z0VD6WZJ ABSTRACT Ever since the posthumous editorial process of Fernando Pessoa's writings began in 1942, editors have found themselves confronted with several challenging tasks: one of them, undoubtedly, has been the deciphering of the author's handwriting. Today, seventy years later, an important number of manuscripts remain unpublished, while numerous other transcriptions need to be revised. The present article concerns a small corpus that falls within the latter group of texts insofar as it reviews the transcriptions of one Portuguese poem, an unfinished French sonnet, three fragmentary English odes and a later English poem. I propose to undertake the revision of the selected corpus essentially with the aid of metrics. Particular attention shall be given to the genesis of each one of these compositions. BIBLIOGRAPHY I. Fernando Pessoa as English Reader and Writer Edited by Patricio Ferrari and Jerónimo Pizarro A collection of scholarly essays dedicated to Fernando Pessoa as English reader and writer including unpublished material from the author’s archive and private library With Pessoa’s digitized private library online, the importance of English to Pessoa has become indisputable, particularly in his formative years: numerous English authors served as the bedrock from which his poetic sensibility emerged, developed and soared. In fact, a significant amount of Pessoa’s writings in English and in Portuguese (including those attributed to his heteronyms and/or to other literary personae) were greatly informed by these (his) original sources. Fernando Pessoa as English Reader and Writer provides ample evidence of his fruitful, lifelong relationship with the English language. In addition to its thematic focus, this latest volume of Portuguese Literary & Cultural Studies features sections dedicated to unpublished materials, new transcriptions of texts Pessoa originally wrote in English and verse translations by Pessoa into Portuguese. Contributors to this volume include George Monteiro, Patricia Silva McNeill, Richard Zenith, and Stefan Helgesson.

Brown University Library. https://doi.org/10.7301/Z0QR4V92 Is Part of: Pessoa Plural―A Journal of Fernando Pessoa Studies, Issue 10 On Pessoa’s The Student of Salamanca [O Estudante de Salamanca de Pessoa] https://doi.org/10.7301/Z0QR4V92 ABSTRACT Fernando Pessoa's version of José de Espronceda's El estudiante de Salamanca [The Student of Salamanca] is a curious singularity among Pessoa's works. As far as we know, this is the only Pessoan translation of a Spanish original into English. This article tries to acknowledge such singularity by pointing out links between Pessoa's archive and his private library, and also by studying the meter and rhythm of Pessoa's version-now available in full thanks to Nicolás Barbosa's transcription and edition, published in this issue of Pessoa Plural-a version that renders with taste and wit the metrical qualities of Espronceda's original.
