The origin and development of a novel hypothesis concerning the location of the Irpinian tract of the Via Appia is discussed and, contrary to claims hitherto sustained, can be identificated as relating to the ancient city of Conza della Campania (Compsa) and the course of the Ofanto river. The tangled history of the Romanization of Samnieum is clarified and its relationship to neglected areas of Eastern Irpinia. This provides a solution to complex problems of tracing the way through the area approaching Volturno and the location of two way-stations of the Regina Viarum between Aeclanum and Venusia in the Second Regio Augustea (Apulia et Calabria).
Via Appia Regina Viarum. Ricerche, contesti, Valorizzazione, 2019
Two journeys, far away in the time and the space (R. Colt Hoare with C. Labruzzi and P. Rumiz) open the opportunity to reflect on the alternating fortunes and misfortunes of the via Appia. The examination of a section of the via Appia in Campania highlights the need for interventions on monuments of the meaning and historical contets of the street, wich have made her fortune over the centuries.

ABSTRACT - The bridges of the Via Appia in the territory of Formia - The Via Appia in the territory of Formia crosses numerous streams, apparently of modest size, but potentially dangerous due to the strong torrential regime: bridges were built to overcome them, many of which remained unknown because they were incorporated into the modern structures of the road. Their systematic examination has documented the efficiency of the road in ancient times with the maintenance of a 4,10 m carriageway and sidewalks of variable pitch; the construction of masonry bridges starting from the 2nd century BC and their conservation, with restorations until late antiquity.
