This document describes the contents and background to the Mekong River Commission’s, Mekong Fish Database 2003. The content and background of each section of the database is described with considerable detail in this document. The document is separated in three parts: The first part, the introduction covers important information on how to install the database and how to get started. This is also included in the users manual but it was felt prudent to include it here as well, as the manual may contain too much details. It also provides the rational for producing the database. The second part covers important aspects of the basin in geological terms and the current ecosystem and river morphology. It also focuses on information on fisheries and fisheries research in the basin. The third part focuses on what information is available in the MFD, where it can be found and where it originates from.
1. Abstract Knowledge on fish and fisheries is generally scattered and not easily available. The best general source on fish is often in the form of guidebooks, but these are expensive to produce and difficult to update. In addition, taxonomy is under continuous flux and changes in nomenclature normally are only slow to penetrate the scientific community, especially in developing countries. Although efforts are made to fill this gap, especially by ICLARM’s Fishbase, the coverage for inland areas is insufficient. The MRC Mekong Fish Database, has been developed to collate and summarise existing knowledge on fish species that occur in the Mekong River Basin. It currently covers over 920 species and contains a tentative list with expected and unresolved species that reach around 1100 species. The information is fully referenced and covers a wide range of subjects that is presented in an easy to use format. The MFD can be used to produce species lists, field identification check lists and even guide books. It may proof to be extremely valuable for EIA’s and provides a quick tool to identify current knowledge. Possible applications are many and the MFD is foremost a process to identify knowledge gaps and accumulate more information on the fish and fisheries of the Mekong Basin. The first public version will be published in January 2003.

Annual sex hormonal pro¢les, gonad development and age determination of 18 (13^14 kg body weight) and three (145^226 kg body weight) Mekong giant cat¢sh (MGC) (Pangasianodon gigas, Chevey) reared in earthen ponds in Chiang Mai and from the Mekong River in Chiang Rai, Thailand, respectively, were investigated. The hormonal pro¢les were determined from blood samples of the ¢sh by electrochemiluminescence immunoassay during May to August in 2000. The highest testosterone levels of 0.06 ng mL À 1 in both sexes and the highest oestradiol of 47.8 and14.23 pg mL À 1 in females and males, respectively, were observed in May. The gonadosomatic index was found to be 0.07 for males and 0.38 for females from ponds in comparison with 2.27 for males and 8.29 for females from the Mekong River. Higher development stages of spermatocytes and oocytes of the cultured ¢sh in May than in February and November were demonstrated. No mature germ cells were obtained from either the males or females, indicating no sexual maturity. The average age of ¢sh was determined from the annual rings of the crosssection of the pectoral ¢ns by a stereomicroscope. The average age of ¢sh in earthen pond determined from the annual ring was 8 years, which agreed with the actual culture records, while those from the Mekong River were 21 years. This information will be bene¢cial for the breeding programmes and conservation of the MGC.

The Mekong giant catfish (Pangasianodon gigas Chevey, 1930) is one of the largest freshwater fish in the world, measuring up to 3 m in length and weighing in excess of 300 kg. It is endemic to the Mekong River Basin area. It is found in Tonle Sap Lake, Tonle Sap River, and the Mekong River. It is not known to occur in the upper 2,000 km of the Mekong River. The current extent of occurrence is estimated at around 4,150 km.

The justification for the Component rests on the threat to biodiversity posed by introduction of exotic fish species for aquaculture and culture-based fisheries. Thus, the aim of the Component is to develop economically feasible aquaculture techniques for 5-8 indigenous Mekong fish species, to complement or replace the use of exotic species. This will be achieved by on-station as well as on-farm research on breeding, nursery and grow-out techniques for the selected species, followed by elaboration of extension materials and packages. The immediate target group for the component is Government researchers under the aquaculture research and development institutions in the riparian countries, while the development target group is small-scale farmers.
