According to one popular slogan, "good ethics is good business." (Grace, Cohen & Holmes 67). This would prove to be very fortunate if it were true, but is it? And if it is not, then what? It may be thatwe are about as certain what amounts to good business as we are what amounts to good ethics (How many small businesses fail in their first year?). By examining the dominant ethical theories, and by considering the main kinds of interactions in which businesses engage that raise moral considerations, this course will help students to gain a solid understanding of the ethical principles governing business interaction, and of the many complications and ambiguities dogging every attempt to say what is right and wrong in business. By facing the complexities of ethical reasoning and struggling against them, students will gain a more nuanced understanding of ethical theories, improve their ethical reasoning abilities, and appreciate the weight of the challenge facing those who strive to conduct their business ethically. The course begins with an examination of ethical theories. Students will be introduced to mutual advantage contractarianism, consequentialism, non-consequentialism, and virtue ethics. They will learn what information each theory focuses on when forming ethical judgments, what concepts and normative principles guide their ethical judgments, and what kind of ethical judgments they render. Students will examine ethical pluralism, relativism, and nihilism, as well as Rawls's reflective equilibrium method for ethical reasoning. The course then examines the kinds of interactions that businesses engage in that raise ethical concerns. Students will examine such questions as: Ought businesses to be maximizing shareholder pro t or showing broader concern for stakeholders? Are there any limits on what can be voluntarily sold and purchased, or on how goods and services can be marketed? Do C.E.O.s make too much or sweatshop workers make too little? Should corporations engaged in international trade act as a de facto moral legislators by imposing their policies on other countries? Are businesses operating in corrupt environments free to join in? And are companies obliged to pay any special consideration to the environmental impacts of their dealings.
Education + Training, 2008
PurposeThis paper aims to offer a critique of the development of university business schools over the last 50 years and provide a perspective on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the publication of the journal Education + Training.Design/methodology/approachThe approach is critical and reflexive, reviewing the historical growth of business schools and focusing on questions relating to their changing rationale.FindingsThe main themes of the analysis are that despite the considerable growth of business schools, this is not an unqualified success story, since recurrent doubts have been expressed regarding the central purposes and objectives of advanced business education.Originality/valueThe paper is of value as a critical and succinct summary of the vibrant but heavily contested growth of business schools.
