Hashimoto’s thyroiditis (HT) is a common autoimmune disease of the thyroid gland. It can affect many parts of the body, including dental health. Studies around the world have shown a link between thyroid problems and dental caries (tooth decay). This article explores this connection and discusses how these findings might relate to Azerbaijan, a region with iodine and fluoride deficiencies, which are important for thyroid and dental health.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of different disinfectants on the bonding strength of adhesive material polymerised without light. A total of 60 3 molar teeth, extracted for various reasons, were used in the study. The dentin surfaces were first exposed by raising the enamel tissue with a carbon separator. All the teeth were then embedded in acrylic. After preparation, samples were subdivided into 4 groups of 15 for the use of different disinfectant solutions. COVID-19 and Tuberculosis are respiratory communicable diseases with a massive spread in the world. This review explores the interactions between COVID19 and tuberculosis TB in the Indian context, highlighting the epidemiological, clinical, and socioeconomic impacts of coinfections. Open access, English language articles published within 2011-2022 with context for Tuberculosis and COVID-19 in India, were identified comprehensively from sources like PubMed, Lit-Covid, and Google scholar, using search terms 'COVID-19' 'Tb' and 'India'. The article examines similarities in symptoms and transmission methods between the two diseases, evaluates the challenges posed by their concurrent presence, and discusses the implications for public health in India. The review further provides comparative data on the incidence, treatment, and prevention strategies for COVID-19 and TB, and offers recommendations for mitigating the impact of their coinfection. It also provides an account of the clinical and social impacts of the co-infection. It concludes on the need to continue research on each of the diseases-Tb and COVID-19 for early diagnosis, appropriate treatment, to prevent them individually as well their coinfections.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Dental health plays a key role in the overall health status and quality of life in children. Consequences of dental diseases in children may result in impairments of daily life activities. The aim of this study was to assess the relationships between dental health and educational performances in elementary students.

Inflammation in pulp tissue is caused by caries bacteria. Most bacteria found are Lactobacillus acidophilus . Propolis is a sticky resin material that is derived from the bees and the surrounding plants, which are reported to have several biological effects including anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory. This study will prove the effectiveness of propolis against proinflammatory cytokines on odontoblast like cells in human dental pulp. This study was performed on cultured odontoblast like cells in pulp. Cell culture was derived from the pulp tissue of human M3 teeth that had been extracted. This study aimed to assess dental caries status and associated factors in Uruguayan adults and elders using data from the first Uruguayan National Oral Health Survey. Data were representative of the country as a whole. Sociodemographic information was collected with a closed questionnaire. Dental caries was assessed by clinical examination using the DMFT index. The final sample consisted of 769 participants. Mean DMFT was 15.20 and 24.12 for the 35-44 and 65-74-year age groups, respectively. Mean number of decayed teeth was 1.70 in adults and 0.66 in elders. Multivariate analyses showed higher prevalence of dental caries associated with age 65-74 years, low socioeconomic status, use of public dental services, presence of gingivitis; for decayed teeth, age 35-44 years, low socioeconomic status, use of public dental services, infrequent tooth brushing, need for oral health care, and presence of root caries showed higher severity. Uruguayan adults and elders from disadvantaged backgrounds concentrated a heavier burden of dental caries.

Introduction: Pathogen recognition receptors are able to identify microbes and their products and play a role in innate immunity. NOD1 has been shown to be present in the odontoblast cells. The present study was conducted with the aim to study the change in expression of NOD1 in odontoblast cells upon stimulation with lipoteichoic acid. Materials and Method: The KN3 cells line was used for the analysis. The study consisted of three groups, the unstimulated cells, KN3 stimulation with 1μg/ml of lipoteichoic acid and KN3 stimulation with 10μg/ml of lipoteichoic acid for 2 hours. Qualitative analysis was done by observing the cells under a phase contrast microscope and quantitative analysis was done by the ELISA test. Results: It was observed that stimulation with LTA increased the expression of NOD1 in odontoblast cells and this expression of NOD1 increased with the increase in the concentration of LTA. The highest expression of NOD1 was observed in the cells that were stimulated with 10μg/ml of LTA for 2 hours (440.8 +/-66.274). Conclusion: NOD1 expressed in odontoblast cells is capable of recognising lipoteichoic acid. There is a concentration dependent upregulation of NOD1 in odontoblast cells that are stimulated by lipoteichoic acid.

Background Oral health is a less-recognized correlate of overall and mental wellbeing. This study aimed to assess the relationship between suicidal behavior (ideation and attempt) and oral health practices and status, and to determine the effect of sex on these associations among Nigerian adolescents. Methods Household survey data were collected from 10 to 19-year-old adolescents in southwestern Nigeria. Dependent variables were daily tooth brushing, daily consumption of refined carbohydrates between meals, and oral hygiene status (measured by plaque index). This study reviews the influence of contextual factors on periodontitis based on a systematic search of studies recorded in the PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and EMBASE databases. Periodontitis was assessed by clinical attachment loss and probing depth for studies with data on the socioeconomic status (SES) of a specific area (area-level SES) or dental care service (service-level) in a catchment area among individuals aged 18 and over. Two independent reviewers performed study selection, data extraction, and assessment of methodological quality. Of the 646 articles identified, 13 were included in the systematic review, representing 101,362 individuals from five countries (USA, UK, Brazil, China, and Uruguay). A higher prevalence of periodontitis was described in lower SES neighborhoods, more deprived postcodes, and poorer provinces. Gini Index results were mixed and inconclusive. Three studies showed that higher coverage of primary dental care at the municipal level was associated with a lower prevalence of periodontitis. Contextual factors at the area-level SES and dental care service might influence periodontitis, but the existing evidence is unclear. The contextual effect is important for periodontal health and may contribute to the prevalence of periodontitis, independent of well-known risk factors and individual levels.

ABSTRACT: Objectives: The aims of this study were to explore the shape of the relationship of income and education with periodontal health, and to assess the interactions between them and race/ethnicity. Method: Individual level data from the Brazilian National Oral Health Survey in 2010 (Pesquisa Nacional de Saúde Bucal-SB Brasil 2010) were obtained for 9,779 subjects. Relations between per capita income and education with periodontal health were smoothed using Locally Weighted Scatter-plot Smoother (Lowess) technique. Multivariable logistic regression was used to assess independent effects of income, education, race/ethnicity adjusted for age, sex and time since last dental appointment. Results: Prevalence of adults with moderate to severe and severe periodontitis was 17.6 and 6.5%, respectively. Dental caries is a multifactorial disease-causing demineralization of dental hard tissue and dissolution of soft tissue affecting most of the adult and child population of the world. Prevention of dental caries can be done by reducing the consumption of fermentable carbohydrates and use of chemical like fluoride. Silver Diamine Fluoride when used topically has been found to arrest dental caries as well as reduce hypersensitivity in teeth. SDF has been found to effectively control active caries due to its silver ions and fluoride making it a wonder solution in prevention of dental caries.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: In this manuscript, fluoride releasing dental materials controlling demineralization in fixed orthodontic patients, and the current strategies to prevent white spots were evaluated. METHODS: General literature review was carried out in SciVerse ScienceDirect databases. The search strategy included the terms from Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) created by National Library of Medicine. RESULTS: 44 relevant studies were included and the respective data were extracted. Many studies showed new alternatives for the treatment of white spot lesions by the use of orthodontic appliances. CONCLUSION: Patients receiving fixed orthodontic treatment should be instructed in a proper brushing technique using a fluoride containing toothpaste, and high risk patients should be bonded with fluoride releasing agent. Additionally, it is recommended to apply fluoride varnish periodically during orthodontic treatment.

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of different matrix metalloproteinase inhibitors (MMPIs) on the microtensile bond strength (μTBS) and nanoleakage of universal adhesives. One hundred twenty non-carious human molars were prepared and randomly assigned to two groups: Scotchbond Bond Universal (SBU) and Gluma Bond Universal (GBU). The samples in each group were assigned to five subgroups (n=12) based on one control (water) and four MMPIs (Benzalkonium-chloride (BAC), Batimastat (BB94), Chlorhexidine (CHX), and Epigallocatechin-gallate (EGCG)). Each adhesive was applied in self-etch (SE) mode or etch-and-rinse (ER) mode. Dentin/composite sticks were fabricated and subjected to the μTBS test after 24 h or 6 months. At 6 months, MMPIs did not affect the μTBS of the adhesives, regardless of etching mode. Nanoleakage was more pronounced in ER mode than in SE mode for all subgroups. All MMPIs, with the exception of CHX, decreased the nanoleakage of GBU in ER mode.

El propósito de este estudio fue comparar los cambios de la microbiota cariogénica antes y después de procedimientos de remoción parcial o ultraconservadora y remoción completa de dentina cariada reblandecida. Se realizó un ensayo clínico, aleatorio, doble ciego en trece molares con lesiones oclusales cavitadas aleatoriamente asignados a un grupo experimental: remoción ultraconservadora con @remoción parcial de la dentina reblandecida (n= 6) y un grupo control con remoción total de la dentina reblandecida (n= 7). El procedimiento de remoción se realizó con instrumental manual. Las muestras de dentina antes y después del procedimiento de remoción fueron analizadas mediante reacciones de PCR para identificar las especies S. mutans, S. sobrinus, L. rhamnosus y L. casei Para contrastar las proporciones de las especies entre los grupos de tratamiento se utilizó la prueba de Fisher. No se encontraron diferencias significativas en la proporción de las especies bacterianas entre los grupos de tratamiento; siendo el S. mutans y L. rhamnosus las especies predominantes antes y después de la remoción en ambos grupos. Este estudio no encontró diferencias en la microbiota cariogénica entre el procedimiento de remoción parcial de dentina reblandecida y la remoción completa de dentina reblandecida.

Introduction and Aim: The management of the proximal cavitated carious lesions in permanent molars has been a challenge for the clinician in terms of integrity of the tooth, aesthetics and longevity of the restoration. The purpose of these case reports is to present a new technique for the management of proximal cavitated carious lesions of permanent teeth and to discuss the indications and benefits along with the problems and contraindications encountered in the clinical practice. Case Reports: Two representative cases are presented in this paper among many others managed with this new approach. Case 1 refers to a 12 year old patient radiographically diagnosed with ICCMS stage 2 lesion on the right maxillary first permanent molar. Background Nanoparticles and regenerative biomineralization are new caries prevention technologies. This study assessed the remineralizing effect of self-assembling peptide (P11-4), Nanosilver Fluoride (NSF) and sodium uoride (NaF) on white spot lesions (WSLs) in permanent teeth. Methods Sixty six young adults with WSLs on buccal surfaces in permanent teeth and ICDAS code 1 or 2, were randomly assigned to one of three groups; P11-4, NSF or NaF. Assessment of ICDAS scores, lesion activity and diagnodent readings of lesions were done at baseline and after 1, 3, 6 and 12 months of agents' application. Comparisons between groups were made using X2 test and comparison within groups were made using McNemar test. Multilevel logistic regression analysis was used to assess the effect of agents on change of ICDAS scores after 12 months. Results There were 147 teeth in 66 patients; mean ± SD age = 13.46 ± 4.31 years. There was signi cant difference in change of ICDAS scores among the three groups after 3 and 6 months (p = 0.005). The regression in ICDAS score increased in all groups in all follow-up intervals with the greatest was among P11-4 group (54.5% after 12 months). Lesion activity assessment has shown signi cant difference between the three groups with the greatest reduction of lesion activity among the P11-4. Multilevel regression showed nonsigni cant reduction of ICDAS in P11-4 and NSF varnishes compared to NaF varnish (AOR = 2.256, 95% CI: 0.58-8.77 and AOR = 2.119, 95% CI: 0.588,-7.636 respectively). Conclusion P11-4 and NSF varnish reduced the ICDAS scores, caries activity and diagnodent readings of WSLs in permanent teeth. This study aimed to determine the effect of xylitol on the development and remineralization of caries in vitro, and to compare this effect with that of fluoride alone and in combination. Two experiments were devised. differences were significant only in B and D when compared with A for AZ, but not between any group for ld. In experiment 2, the numerical values of AZ and ld for control UN (unremineralized) and remineralized groups (1-4) ranked as UN>3>4>1>2. Compared with UN, this difference was significant in all groups with ld, but not in any group with ĢZ. We concluded that tolerable levels of xylitol alone may not show a significant caries inhibiting and remineralizing effect, but may act as a caries inhibitor additively with fluoride.

Antimicrobial and antibiofilm activity were assessed using agar diffusion test and evaluation of biofilm metabolism, respectively. In addition, fluoride (F) and TMP releases as well as the diametral tensile (DTS) and compressive (CS) strength were determined. The percentage of mineral loss (%SH), integrated loss of subsurface hardness (ΔKHN) and enamel F concentrations were also evaluated. Results: RMGICs containing CHX associated or not with TMP presented higher inhibition zones and effect on S. mutans biofilm. A reduction on CS was observed only for RMGIC + 2.5%CHX and on DTS for RMGIC + 2.5%CHX + 14%TMP. The highest F and TMP releases and lowest %SH and ΔKHN values were detected for RMGIC + 1.25%CHX + 14%TMP and RMGIC + 2.5%CHX + 14%TMP. Higher enamel F concentrations were observed for TMP groups. Conclusion: 1.25%CHX and 14%TMP increased antimicrobial/antibiofilm action and the ability to prevent enamel demineralization, with minimal effect on the mechanical properties of RMGIC. The aim of this in vivo study was to asses the performance of a laser fluorescence technique and compare the values with those of visual inspection and bitewing radiography for occlusal caries diagnosis in second primary molars in children aged 6-8 years. Methods: 138 teeth with macroscopically intact occlusal surfaces were examined by a single examiner, using both the laser fluorescence technique and visual inspection. Measurements were recorded for mesial, central and distal pits. The teeth were cleaned before examination. A second calibrated examiner evaluated the bitewing radiographies. Results: Z test (p<0,05) showed difference for all three techniques in sound and caries conditions. Laser fluorescence showed, in comparison with the conventional techniques, a high sensitivity but a low specificity. The values for sensitivity and specificity were: 0,92 and 0,42 (laser fluorescence) and 0,51 and 0,55 (visual inspection). Mc Nemar test (p<0,0001) showed difference between techniques. Histological validation was not possible in this clinical study, but it appeared that the laser fluorescence technique was overscoring some stained fissures. Intra-examiner reproducibility was good for laser fluorescence (kappa 0,83) and low for visual inspection (kappa 0,37). Conclusions: Laser fluorescence does not appear to be a useful adjunct technique for occlusal caries diagnosis in primary molars. The distal fissure of maxillary second primary molars was the most affected site by caries lesion.

Statement of Problem: Flare up is an acute exacerbation of an asymptomatic pulpal and/or periapical pathosis after commencement or termination of root canal therapy. Its incidence may be different in patients treated by different practitioners regarding their graduation status. Purpose: The aim of this study was to compare flare up incidence in patients treated by dental students of Shiraz Dental School and those whom were treated by endodontists. Materials and Method: Patients' information including age, gender, and previous history of pain and pulp vitality were taken before treatment of 383patients. 230 of them were treated by senior dental students of Shiraz Dental School and 153of them were treated by endodontists. Students employed conventional step back technique whereas specialists had a chance to select variety of techniques. Data, regarding the quantity of pain experienced by patients were collected 48 hours after treatment. Case was considered a flare up if the patient had experienced severe pain which hadn't been reduced either by analgesic medication or by consequent swelling. Chisquare statistic tests were used to analyze the receiving data. Results: 41 individuals (10.7%) out of 383 patients depicted flare up. 13.5% of these patients were treated by students and 6.5% were treated by endodontists. The difference was statistically significant. Conclusion: Different rate of flare up in two groups is probably due to the dissimilarity in skills, techniques and materials used by different operators.

The objective of this research was to evaluate the antibacterial effects of chamomile infusion (Matricaria chamomilla) on Streptococcus mutans Puno 2013. lnfusions were performed at 2%, 4 %, 8% of Matricaria chamomil/a. Was used as positive control to O. 12% chlorhexidine as negative control and sterilized mineral water. To determine the antibacterial effect of infusions technique disk diffusion test with five treatments and three replications was used. Phenolics profile infusion at 2% and the hydroalcoholic extract of Matricaria chamomilla by performancia high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) was also performed. The results showed no antibacterial effect in vitro of the infusions on Streptococcus mutans, not as presented inhibition halos; only 0.12% chlorhexidine showed an inhibition zone of 2.5 mm on average. The Food and Drug Administration recently cleared silver diamine fl uoride for reducing tooth sensitivity. Clinical trials document arrest and prevention of dental caries by silver diamine fl uoride. This off-label use is now permissible and appropriate under U.S. law. A CDT code was approved for caries arresting medicaments for 2016 to facilitate documentation and billing. We present a systematic review, clinical indications, clinical protocol and consent procedure to guide application for caries arrest treatment.

This study examined the release of cetylpyridinium chloride and benzalkonium chloride from fatty acid chelate temporary dental cement and their antimicrobial effects. The cement was Cavex Temporary, and either cetylpyridinium chloride or benzalkonium chloride was added (1% or 5% by mass), incorporating into the base paste. Release of the additives was determined by reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography. Possible chemical interactions between the cement components and additives were examined by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Antimicrobial effects were assessed by measuring the zone of inhibition around sample discs after 24 h in a Streptococcus mutans culture. FTIR spectroscopy showed no interaction with cement components. For both additives, release was by diffusion for approximately the first 6 hours, with equilibration after about 2 weeks. Diffusion coefficients were 1.76 m 2 s ½ to 8.05 × 10 −12 m 2 s ½ and total release was 10.3 to 44.7% of additive loading. Zones of inhibition with additive were significantly larger than those for control discs. In conclusion, the antimicrobial properties of Cavex temporary cement are improved by the addition of the antimicrobial compounds cetylpyridium chloride and benzalkonium chloride, which are released by a diffusion process.

Background: Chlorhexidine gluconate is a widely used antimicrobial agent. Adding chlorhexidine and quaternary ammonium compounds to filling materials, such as composite resins, acrylic resins, and glass ionomer cements increases the antibacterial property of restorative materials. This study includes antibacterial property of glass ionomer restorative cements with chlorhexidine gluconate. Aim: The primary objective of our study was to compare the antimicrobial properties of two commercially available glass ionomer cements with and without chlorhexidine gluconate on strains of mutans streptococci. Materials and methods: Two glass ionomers (Fuji II Conventional and Fuji IX) were used. Chlorhexidine gluconate was mixed with glass ionomer cements, and antimicrobial properties against mutans streptococci were assessed by agar diffusion. The tested bacterial strain was inhibited and the antimicrobial properties decreased with time. Results: The highest amount of antimicrobial activity with mean inhibitory zone was found in Fuji II with chlorhexidine gluconate followed by Fuji IX with chlorhexidine gluconate, Fuji II without chlorhexidine gluconate, and Fuji IX without chlorhexidine gluconate. Conclusion: The results of the study confirmed that the addition of 5% chlorhexidine gluconate to Fuji II and Fuji IX glass ionomer cements resulted in a restorative material that had increased antimicrobial properties over the conventional glass ionomer cements alone for Streptococcus mutans.

INTRODUCTION: Embrace TM Varnish is a new fluoride varnish which contains xylitol-coated calcium and phosphate (XCP). This combination leads to increase the release time of fluoride in this varnish. OBJECTIVES: To compare the remineralizing effect of Embrace TM varnish with Profluoride ® varnish on caries-like lesions in primary teeth regarding lesion depth and calcium and phosphate enamel content. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty eight anterior primary teeth were coated with nail varnish, leaving squares of 4x4 mm then sectioned longitudinally in a labiolingual direction into two equal halves. Each half was considered as a specimen (96 specimens). Carieslike lesions were created in all specimens. Specimens were divided into two groups. group I (n=48) was subdivided into subgroup IA (n=24) treated with Embrace TM varnish and subgroup IB (n=24) served as control, while groupII (n=48) was subdivided into subgroup IIA (n=24) treated with Profluoride ® varnish and subgroup IIB (n=24) served as control. Specimens were subjected to pH cycling then they were examined with polarized light microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer. RESULTS: No significant difference in mean percent reduction in lesion depth following treatment with Embrace TM varnish and Profluoride ® varnish (49.51 and 45.11, respectively) at P= 0.58. Greater significant of calcium phosphate ratio was found for Embrace TM varnish (2.25±0.43) than Profluoride ® varnish (1.65±0.05) at P< 0.0001. Significance was set at the 5% level. CONCLUSIONS: Embrace TM varnish had no significant difference in mean percent reduction in lesion depth than Profluoride ® varnish, while it had a better remineralization effect than Profluoride ® varnish in terms of higher mineral content.

In oral radiology, the potential for cross infection is high, since the hands of dental personnel can be contaminated by direct contact with the patient's mouth, with fluids such as saliva, blood or others. Also, contamination can occur at the time of radiographic development in the dark room. Due to this great problem, in the present study the objective was to evaluate bacterial antibiotypes of environmental origin in the Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology clinic of the Faculty of Dentistry of the University of Los Andes (FOULA). The sampling was obtained from the surfaces of greatest contact and from the (liquid) solutions for radiographic development. The microbiological study was based on isolation, identification and antimicrobial susceptibility testing. Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus species, with resistance to erythromycin and clindamycin, as well as coagulase-negative Staphylococcus species resistant to erythromycin, were isolated from contact surfaces. In radiographic development liquids, a greater development of 100,000 CFU / mL of inducible chromosomal AmpC ESBL producing complex Enterobacter cloacae was observed. The species S. epidermidis isolated on two different surfaces presented the same antibiotype, otherwise in the rest of the species of the genus Staphylococcus that showed different antibiotypes. Although no significant bacterial growth was determined on the surfaces evaluated, the radiographic development solutions showed an antimicrobial multirresistant antibiotype an enterobacteria of high bacterial count, which represents a high risk of cross infection in the area evaluated.

Objectives: Treatment of asymptomatic necrotic teeth is a common type of occurrence in endodontic practice. Root canal treatment of these teeth sometimes results in pain and /or swelling of varying degree. These severe symptoms upset both the patient and dentist. This study was to compare the effect of prophylactic amoxicillin and placebo in endodontic flare-up in asymptomatic necrotic teeth requiring root canal treatment. Introduction: Caries is an infectious, multifactorial, transmissible and preventable disease. Therefore, the prevention of dental caries in all ages, especially in childhood, is key to prevent future loss of teeth, compromising the quality of life of the patient. Numerous studies analyze the behavior of strategies to prevent cavities. Reviews were found in Spanish and English on the prevention of caries through specific strategies; however, no updated systematic review was found that synthesizes what has been published in recent years, in English and Spanish, about prevention strategies. Objective: to describe the behavior of methods for the prevention of dental caries based on a systematic review of the literature between 2008 and 2018. Methodology: A search was conducted in Medline, Elsevier, Cochrane Library and Google academic articles evaluating the methods to prevent cavities. Results: most report that prevention is effective, either by analyzing individual techniques or the combination of these. They emphasize the use of probiotic products, ozone therapy, health education programs aimed at children, mothers and teachers, dental brushing, fluoride use, use of polyalcohols and sealants from pits and fissures. Conclusion: most caries prevention strategies are effective. Based on the results, the dentist will be able to effectively contribute to the prevention of cavities, providing their patients with the necessary tools to keep their teeth in a state of functionality and aesthetics.

La comunidad de sordos, conjunto de personas que tienen como lengua natural la lengua de senas, posee una cultura y formas distintivas de comunicacion, lo cual supone necesidades informativas particulares. situación bucodental en la población escolar del sector público, mediante el perfil epidemiológico bucodental. Metodología: Estudio descriptivo. Se utilizó la metodología sugerida por la OMS para este tipo de trabajos con un muestreo en diversas etapas donde se combinan la técnica de conglomerados y el muestreo sistemático. Los autores examinaron 784 niños de 5 a 13 años de las 47 instituciones educativas seleccionadas. Se hizo una base de datos en el programa Access de donde se obtuvieron los porcentajes y los promedios. Resultados: La proporción de niños con historia de caries es 77%, la prevalencia de caries es 67.7%, el COE-d a los 5 años fue 0.64, el índice COP-D a los 12 años es 3.5. De los niños evaluados 46.1% se encuentran en condiciones de salud periodontal. En cuanto a la necesidad de asistencia y consulta, 91.5% requieren atención odontológica. Análisis: El porcentaje de niños sin historia de caries a los 12 años, para el presente perfil epidemiológico de la ciudad (2005), es superior al que suministran estudios similares en los niveles del departamento y de la nación (1998). A los 5 años de edad ocurre lo contrario, pues hay aumento en la incidencia de caries en los niños que ingresan a las instituciones educativas. El índice COP-D a los 12 años, clasifica al municipio en riesgo intermedio para caries. Conclusiones: Cali debe definir una estrategia en salud bucal donde se logre la concurrencia de los actores responsables a fin de alcanzar una acción efectiva que repercuta de modo positivo en la situación bucodental de la población. La OMS y la FDI han publicado que entre el 60 y 90% de los escolares padecen caries. Dentistry is one of the areas of health sciences with the highest risk of infection by SARS-CoV2, the virus responsible for COVID-19. Therefore, the pandemic has had a great impact on dental education, research, and clinical practice. The teaching of chairs with clinical components has been more affected, for which it has been necessary to seek educational alternatives such as virtual education. This change affects dental students since it implies a different educational practice. The objective of this research is to describe the impact of COVID-19 on dental education, research, and clinical practice from the perspective of dental students at the Universidad de Los Andes, Venezuela. It is a quantitative, descriptive, and cross-sectional study. The sample was made up of 160 dental students who answered a self-administered questionnaire. All participants considered that COVID-19 affects the educational practice of dentistry, especially students due to the prolonged suspension of academic activities, exposure to the virus, and risk of contagion. Besides, they consider that it will affect clinical practice due to the risk of getting infected during the consultation. However, despite the impact of COVID-19, they have not considered changing careers. The dental students of the Universidad de Los Andes perceive the future of dental education as a complement between the virtual and the practical, the latter being essential for their learning and ability in the clinical area.
